Panel to review detainees’ cases: meeting Jammu, January 18 The meeting of the committee was scheduled to be held here yesterday, but had to be postponed as the Joint Secretary, Home, Mr R.K. Ahooja, the Centre’s representative, could not reach here because of inclement weather. At least 50 cases might be reviewed by the committee. The committee had been set up following widespread criticism of the Mufti-led government over the release of 24 former militants soon after it came to power in November last. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani had advised the government to be cautious. Thereafter, a committee, headed by the Financial Commissioner, Home, Mr S.D. Singh, had been set up to screen individual cases before ordering their release. The Joint Secretary, Home, and a senior official of the Intelligence Bureau are also on the committee. The Mufti-led government, in its common minimum programme, had made a commitment to release “innocent” persons in pursuance of its policy of providing a healing touch to the victims of terrorism. The state government had to explain its viewpoint on the controversial issue when the release of over 24 former militants was made an election issue in the recent Assembly elections in Gujarat. The BJP was opposed to the release of those charged with terrorism. Some senior leaders of the Congress were also not in favour of the action. |
Minister: end Indo-Pak hostilities Srinagar, January 18 “Long-lasting peace in the state can be achieved only by ending hostilities between India and Pakistan permanently”, Mr Baigh, who is also the Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, told a group of students who called on him last evening. He claimed that the fast emerging global scenario would encourage the two countries to end their hostilities and resolve all outstanding issues, including Kashmir, amicably. Mr Baigh suggested confidence-building measures like free access to travel and trade to Kashmiris in both India and Pakistan to help ease tension. PTI |
