Health camp at Kajheri

Chandigarh, January 17
Mr Hemant Arora, District Governor, Rotary Shivalik Chandigarh, visited Kajheri village, adopted by the club, for inspecting a health camp for detection of cataract and tuberculosis in poor patients.

The District Governor also interacted with cured TB patients and handicapped persons, who had been provided artificial limbs, free of cost, by Dr V. J. S. Vohra, Chairman and Managing Director of the Jyot Trust

According to a press note, Rotary Shivalik, during the past five months, under the presidentship of Dr G. S. Kochhar, undertook 28 projects for the community. These included vermi-composting project and adoption of children, suffering from primary immunology deficiency disorder.

The note added that blood donation, free medical check-up, TB detection and multifaceted health camps were also organised at Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, and Kajheri village. Free ear check-up and AIDS awareness camps were also held.

As many as 11 handicapped persons were donated artificial limbs, appliances, wheel chairs and tricycles. Dental surgeon from the club attended the Rotary Intercontinental Medical Project. In another project, 70 babies, belonging to poor families, were operated upon for correction of birth defects, including cleft clips, cleft palates and club foot. DIG (security) C. S. R. IMA defends Amritsar docs

Coming out in defence of the doctors allegedly involved in the kidney sale racket in Amritsar, the Chandigarh branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) today condemned the police action and subsequent trial by the media, sensationalising the role of doctors.

The IMA secretary, Dr Neeraj Nagpal, said the government, officialdom and media seemed to have chosen the easier solution of penalising one surgeon rather than addressing the larger issue.

What needed to be highlighted is the fact that whether the surgeries were conducted without approval of the authorisation committee and were the laid down procedures violated during disposal of dead bodies or did the doctors violate any payment norms, he quipped.

Award for PGI doc

Dr Ashok Kumar Gupta of the ENT Department, PGI, has been awarded the P.A. Shah Consultant award in recognition of his contribution in the field of endoscopic optic nerve decompression.

The award was given to Dr Gupta at the 55th annual conference of the AOI, Patna.

5 clay courts for tennis enthusiasts

Total Tennis Academy (TTA) today dedicated five red clay courts to the city tennis enthusiasts in the YMCA, Sector 11, Chandigarh, with inauguration done by Mr Satish Chandra. Mr L.D. Kapoor, chief coach-cum-director of the academy, said red clay is the best surface for the players to improve their game. These courts give perfect bounce to every ball and this gives a player more time to improve his striking skills. He said red clay was known as the most tiring court worldwide in natural surfaces.

Mr Devender Kapoor, Executive Director of the TTA, said other tennis centres like Mount Carmel tennis academy and St Soldier’s Academy at Panchkula will have similar surfaces in the near future.

Badminton meet

Nitin Dhaiya of Haryana was accorded top seeding in the under-13 boys singles in the VIIIth Tara Chand Memorial Badminton Tournament, the main draw rounds of which going to begin tomorrow at Sports Complex, Sector 3, Panchkula. G.M. Nandish of Karnataka is top seeded in under-16 boys, Bahiniman Bohra of Assam in under 19 boys section and Aditi Mutatk of Maharashtra in girls section.

In the qualifying matches played today, Akash Sethi, Vikas and Mandeep, all of Chandigarh, have qualified for the main draw on the second day of the qualifying rounds in under-19 boys section. In the under-13 section, Dhruv, Gaurav, Nependra Singh and Kritesh qualified for the boys singles.

SD-32 win

GGD SD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh, outplayed the GGS College for Women, Chandigarh, 19-11, in the Panjab University Inter-College Handball (women) Tournament being played on league basis at PU grounds today. The GGD SD College eves also played a drawn match against the MCM DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, with scores being 18-18.

Dev Samaj Club-21 in women section and DAV College, Sector 10, in men section emerged winners in the Chandigarh Senior State Basketball Meet concluded here today at Sector 7 Sports Complex. In the last league match, Dev Samaj Club defeated the MCM DAV 36 by 29-15 while DAV College cagers outplayed DAV School Club-8 by 57-53.

Revised orders on DSPs’ transfers

After a fortnight of withdrawing its orders on transfers of Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), the Chandigarh Administration today issued revised transfers orders with ‘negligible’ changes.

In the revised orders, DSP Devinder Thakhur, who was DSP, Lines, has been posted as DSP, Economic Offence Wing and Women and Child Support Unit. DSP BD Bector has swapped the post with DSP Thakhur. DSP SC Abrol, OSD (Vigilance) has been transferred as DSP, East. The DSP, East, Mr Surjit Singh, has been transferred to the Security wing. Earlier DSP, Vijay Pal, was holding additional charge of DSP, Security.

Sources in the police said the fresh orders were issued in consultation with the new Inspector General of Police, Chandigarh. Earlier the Chandigarh Administration had withdrawn its orders within 40 minutes of the orders being faxed to the media. Though the reason for issuing the fresh orders with ‘negligible’ changes could not be ascertained, the sources said there were some other DSPs who had completed their two-year stay or even more at their present place of posting.

40 illegal structures demolished

In a day-long operation a team of the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) here demolished over 40 unauthorised structures encroaching on PUDA land in various parts of the township. The operation, which was carried out under the leadership of SDO (Buildings) J.S. Tiwana, lasted for over 10 hours.

While 13 stalls were demolished in PUDA’s commercial pocket in Phase VI, 14 stalls were removed in Phase III, Industrial Area near Mohali village. The team also demolished over 10 hutments built on some vacant plots of PUDA in Phase I near the HM quarters and a few hutments which were being used for living on the road separating Phase X and XI were also demolished. “Our first option is to ask those in the hutments and stalls to voluntarily remove their belongings and demolish the structures constructed. In case they fail to do so, we use our men and machines, 'stated a PUDA official.
