Ashwani stars in Khalsa College win

New Delhi, January 14
Ashwani Katyal played an all-round role (2 for 27 and 46 with seven fours) to help Khalsa College defeat Bright Club by six wickets and entered the quarter-final of the seventh Sahibzada Ajit Singh Cricket Tournament, organised by the Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, at its ground in Pitampura.

Khalsa College will take on Rajdhani Sports in the quarter-final on January 16. Ashwani Katyal was presented the Man of the Match award by Khalsa College director of physical education Pargat Singh.

Scores: Bright Club: 185 for 8 in 40 overs (Netar Pal 47, 1x6, 5x4; Sanjay Bambal 46, 5x4; Tony Singh 2 for 14, Ashwani Katyal 2 for 27, Vaibhav Rastogi 2 for 35).

Khalsa College: 186 for 4 in 38.1 overs (Rajinder Bisht 61, 2x6, 8x4; Ashwani Katyal 46, 7x4; Rajiv Uniyal 31, 4x4).

Hosts Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce also entered the quarter-final when they beat Bhagat Singh College by seven wickets. Guru Gobind Singh will take on Super Star Club on January 18.

Scores: Bhagat Singh College: 127 all out in 35.2 overs (Rahul Malik 27, Rahul Bahl 20, Anish Suri 2 for 7, Ankit Chawla 2 for 35).

Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce: 131 for 3 in 23 overs (Udit Kumar 51, 7x4; Piyush Sharma 30, Jatin 2 for 44).

Nalin, Subodh bowl Pan Business to victory

Devastating bowling spells by Nalin Khanna (3 for 3) and Subodh Badola (3 for 16) enabled Pan Business List Pvt. Ltd defeat NGO Worth in the opening match of the seven-a-side Inter-Corporate Cricket Tournament, organised by Criswim Academy, at the Netaji Subhash Sports Complex, Jasola, New Delhi. Nalin Khanna was adjudged the Man of the Match.

The tournament was inaugurated by Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) sports secretary Sunil Dev. DDCA Sports Working Committee convenor Ashok Sharma, Suman Tripathi of Criswim and R K Tripathi of Delhi Colts were also present.

Scores: NGO Worth: 45 all out in 10 overs (Nalin Khanna 3 for 3, Subodh Badola 3 for 16).

Pan Business List: 49 for 2 in 8 overs (Arun 23, Nalin Khanna 12, Yoginder 2 for 15).

Hindustan Club off to winning start

Hindustan Club started the defence of their title on a promising note when they beat Moghals 2-0 in the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA)-SAIL Super League match at the Ambedkar Stadium on Tuesday. Harinder Singh Rawat scored both the goals.

Goans held Indian Nationals to a goalless draw in another keenly contested match.

Hindustan Club forged ahead in the 14th minute when goalkeeper Vinay Singh blocked the header of Sameer Jung, but could not gather the ball properly and Harinder Rawat pounced on the chance to push the ball in. A minute before the interval, Rawat struck again when he pushed the ball in with a neat placement off a pass by Jung.

Wednesday’s fixture: City Club vs Indian Air Force (3 pm)—Ambedkar Stadium.

State Bank cricket

The All-India State Bank of India (SBI) Inter-Circle Cricket Tournament will begin at the Delhi University ground from January 16. SBI circle welfare committee local head office secretary V K Gupta said 12 teams would participate in the tournament.

The tournament will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis at the Delhi University, Khalsa College and Hindu College grounds. Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Nayyar will inaugurate the tournament.

Xansa beat Hudco

Xansa beat Hudco by six runs in a league match of the tenth Teri Cup Cricket Tournamet at the Teri Oval. Scores: Xansa: 173 for 7 in 25 overs (Rajeev Khanna 63, 4x4; Atul Gupta 43, 4x4; Godwin Toppo 4 for 29, Ramesh Negi 2 for 43). Trilok Chand elected Uttranchal Heroes patron

Former international athlete Trilok Chand was elected patron of the Uttranchal Heroes Football Club at the annual elections held recently. Municipal Councillor Kushalmani Ghildiyal has been elected as chairman of the club.

West Delhi Cricket beat Ramjas School No 2 by five wickets and entered the semi-final of the first Shanti Memorial Under-14 Cricket Tournament at the Najafgarh Sports Complex ground.

Scores: Ramjas School: 94 for 7 in 30 overs (Hitesh Kumar 31, Wasim Raja 30, Supreet Singh 3 for 34, Rochak 3 for 9).

Inter-School Soccer League

Sixteen Delhi school teams are taking part in the ESPN Premier League Junior Inter-School Soccer Championship, which was inaugurated by soccer star Baichung Bhutia at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Tuesday.

The Delhi league will be followed by similar events in Kolkata from January 28 and in Mumbai from February 4. Winning teams in each city will be awarded the EPLJ Gold Trophy.

The teams participating in the Delhi leg are Air Force School (Subroto Park), Army Public School, Birla Vidya Niketan, Delhi Public School (R K Puram), G D Goenka School, Guru Harkishan School (Vasant Vihar), Gyan Bharti School, Modern School (Barakhamba Road), Modern School (Vasant Vihar), Mother’s International School (Aurobindo Marg), Mt Carmel, Mt Saint Mary’s, Salwan Public School, Springdales (Daula Kuan), Springdales (Pusa Road) and St Columba’s.

Grant for abattoir, dairy farms sanctioned

New Delhi, January 14
The Chairman of the standing committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Mr Ram Babu Sharma, today said that the Delhi Government had agreed to sanction grant to construct a slaughterhouse, develop rural areas and dairy farms in the Capital. Earlier, the government used to issue loan to develop these areas.

The finance department of the Delhi Government has so far issued three installments for the development of the villages in the Capital and the fourth installment will be sanctioned in February, he said.

While delivering the budget speech in the corporation, Mr Ram Babu Sharma said that estimated budget of 2003-2004 would be tax-free. The corporation has collected Rs 485.80 crore this year while last year, it collected only Rs 404.90 crore.

The Unit Area System (UAS) for property tax collection will be implemented in April.

Anant Ram complex to get water connection

The New Delhi Municipal Council has approved the provision of temporary water supply connection to Anant Ram Dairy Complex at Sector-XIII, R K Puram.

Mr Ram Bhaj, MLA and Vice-Chairperson, NDMC, started the work of providing connections in the morning on Monday in a simple function organised by the Sudhar Samiti of the complex. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ram Bhaj said that the civic body had already provided temporary electricity connection to the residents of the complex and now the water supply connection would be provided subject to deposit of 70 per cent of the estimated cost. Of 192 dwelling units, only 52 have applied for water connection along with the estimated cost.

Mr Ram Bhaj said that the improvement of the colony has been done from the MLA fund.
