BODY & MIND
Memory king with a Guinness dream
Tripti Nath

HOW many numerals and telephone numbers can you remember at a time? Is it possible to remember all the 80,000 words listed in the 2,000 pages of the Oxford dictionary and the page where the word is mentioned? Or memorise the value of Pi up to 7400th place?

You may dismiss such an idea as ridiculous but 29-year-old Biswaroop Roy Chowdhary, a production engineer-turned-memory trainer, and his team think otherwise.

Chowdhary and his team proved their claim of having a photographic memory to a group of mediapersons here recently.

Convinced of the enormous potential of the brain, Chowdhary began his career as a memory trainer from Chandigarh after completing his engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. He set a record for the Limca Book of Records in 1998 by clearing the standard memory test of memorising a shuffled pack of 52 playing cards in three minutes and 56 seconds. He succeeded in revising the record over the next five years. His next goal is to get a slot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

He believes that no human being is born with a poor memory. He says that the human brain has the capacity to store information of 40 libraries with 80,0000 books.

Chowdhary started the first dynamic memory centre in Vikaspuri ten months back. Today, the centres have mushroomed to 42 in various cities, besides Kathmandu.

The centres have received an overwhelming response from students appearing in board and competitive examinations. Each centre has about 90 students.

Any student interested in improving his memory by learning the memory techniques has to pay Rs 2,500. Ten more centres are scheduled to be set up in Ambala, Jind, Karnal and Patiala between January 14 and January 21.

He says that his organisation is engaged in developing and imparting learning and retention techniques to students, teachers and parents who feel burdened with syllabus. Chowdary opines that most of us do not tap the optimum capacity of the brain. He stressed the need to catalogue information and experience and the technique of associated recall for optimum results.

Dismissing the efficacy of drugs, which promise to improve memory, Chowdhary cited an experiment on a group of 30 people (one that had taken a memory enhancing ayurvedic drug and the other that had not). He concluded that both groups were able to recall the same amount of information.

He has authored seven books including Dynamic Memory Methods, Seven Days to Power Memory, Speed Palmistry with Memory Tips, Vocabulary @ 100 words per hour, Memorising Dictionary Made Easy (all published by Diamond Pocketbooks) and Smart Brain (Vikas Publishing House). Another book, Impossible is Possible, will soon be published by the organisation.

Zero-oil cooking

Dr Bimal Chajjer, former Assistant Professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and founder director of the Science and Art Of Living (SAAOL) Foundation, aimed at reversing heart diseases through lifestyle modification, is now trying to convince heart patients and their spouses about the advantages of zero oil cooking.

At the end of the three-day workshop (January 10-12) at Palms Court, a resort at Sheikh Sarai, 30 cardiac patients and their spouses will return home with a taste for dishes based on zero oil. Participants from Delhi, Faridabad, Haldwani (Uttaranchal), Raipur (Chhattisgarh) and Varanasi will get a chance to sample 150 dishes based on zero oil besides learning about various techniques of lifestyle modification.

The fee for attending the workshop is Rs 16,000. It includes a complete check-up of the patient besides training on lifestyle modification by various experts. On Sunday, SAAOl dieticians will give demonstration of zero oil recipes including mixed vegetable, roasted snacks, salad dressing with carbohydrates and proteins and ‘Gajar Ka Halwa.’

Since he quit his job at AIIMS in 1995 after practising for four years in various hospitals including King George Medical College, Lucknow and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Delhi, this versatile cardiologist has been disseminating information about the merits of lifestyle modification through 250 workshops (attended by 10,000 persons including cardiac patients and their spouses) across the country besides Bangkok. He insists on the participation of spouses at the workshops as they entail modification in lifestyle through changes in diet, yoga, meditation, exercises and stress management.

SAAOL Foundation was set up in 1995 to promote the concept of lifestyle modification and create awareness about heart diseases and treatment by non-invasive methods.

Dr Chajjer has authored three books on zero oil cooking (one brought out by SAAOL) in 2002 and two others brought out by Diamond Pocket Books in Hindi and English in 2002. While the book bought out by SAAOL is a compilation of 450 zero oil recipes made with SAAOL oil or water, the book published by Diamond Pocket Books has 200 new recipes. Another book, which promises 150 recipes of sweets made without oil, is expected to be released by Diamond Pocket Books in a fortnight.

Dr Chajjer owes his inspiration to Dr Dean Ornish, advisor to National Institute of Health and former Health Advisor to former US President Bill Clinton. Dr Chajjer enjoys the distinction of being the first Indian doctor to be trained by Dr Ornish in Germany and US in 1992 and ‘96 respectively. Dr Ornish was the first cardiologist to demonstrate through angiography that arterial blockages can be reduced by a combination of lifestyle management and allopathy.

One of Dr Chajjer’s patients, a Mumbai-based hotelier, Jaswant Singh, has started a hotel in Juhu, which serves zero oil cooking based on SAAOL recipes.
