Police verification of domestics, Gurgaon, January 7 According to the district police chief, Mr Kuldip Singh Sihag, the police verified the antecedents of 10,000 domestic servants and 17,000 tenants last year. The campaign got diluted somewhat due to the apathy on the part of the those who hire domestic workers and the landlords, who are not always enthusiastic about providing the full details of their tenants. The police have prepared a form in which the landlords and the domestic workers are supposed to provide information such as permanent addresses and earlier employers. The authorities had given area-beats to the constabulary for collecting the details on the domestic workers and the tenants. The experience of the police has been that the verifications of domestic workers and tenants had helped them to check not only small crimes like thefts but also cases of murder in the district. Mr Sihag promised to provide all possible help to the residents on the issue. However, he lamented the lack of enthusiasm on the part of the residents who have not been forthcoming in providing detailed information as desired by the police. He wanted the residents to be enthusiastic on such issues and help the police in its drive to reduce the crime rate in the district. The worry of the police on this issue is understandable. With the continued expansion of the city and the influx of population to the area, it is important that some kind of data bank be maintained on the arrival of new domestic workers and tenants here. Moreover, Gurgaon being close to Delhi and directly accessible to bordering states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, the police feel that there is always a danger of anti-social elements on the run sneaking into the city either as domestic servants or tenants. The police chief feared that the inability to maintain a proper data bank in this regard could have a negative impact on the local economy, as Gurgaon is looked upon as safe place for business. Also, in many of the posh sectors and colonies, there are any number of houses, which are occupied by old couples and nuclear families. Many of the houses have working couples, making their houses vulnerable to robberies and other criminal activities. The focus of the police is particularly on those who hire ‘Kholis’ on the outskirts of the city. There are a large number of such ‘Kholis’ functioning on the outskirts of the city. A large number of migrant labourers stay in these ‘Kholis’. In this regard, the experience of the police has not been pleasant. There have been cases when the domestic workers have indulged in heinous crimes, including the murder of their employers. In many of these criminal activities, the police have been able to arrest the culprits and bring them to justice by virtue of the information provided to the police by the residents. |
