Chandigarh, December 27
The VIIth sub-junior and junior national karate championship, involving more than 400 players from 22 states across the country, was inaugurated today by Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal, MP, at the Sector 10 Skating Rink. The three-day meet is being organised by the Amateur Karate Association of Chandigarh under the aegis of the Sports Karate Federation of India (SKFI).
Earlier, Mr Ravinder Talwar, president of the SKFI, welcomed the chief guest and highlighted the activities of the federation in popularising the sport in the country. Mr Bansal appreciated the efforts of the SKFI and the Amateur Karate Association of Chandigarh for taking this courage to initiate this meet. He called upon the participants to play in the true sportmanship.
Sabeeha, Sidhu take lead: Sabeeha Dhillon of Punjab and Bhai Gurjinder Singh Sidhu of Chandigarh lead the .22 Std Rifle OS (NR) Open Event in senior women and junior men sections, respectively, on the third day of the 27th Northern India Shooting Championship today at Sector 25 Patiali ki Rao shooting ranges. Sabeeha who faltered last evening by sliding to number three spot in 10-metre air rifle in senior section and at number two in junior women section, today showed the grit to make a comeback. Gurjinder Sidhu was leading at 238/300.
Avneet Sidhu, a student of BCA final year at Dashmesh Girls College at Badal Village, continued to lead in 10-metre air rifle senior section with score of 388/400. Today the renowned Rana family also shot with Sushma Rana, the star of the 32nd National Games at Hyderabad, who took part in 25-metre air pistol event.
At the end of the day, Susham Rana with 578/600 was leading in sports pistol (ISSF) senior women section, while Viraj Singh of the ITBP lead in std. pistol (ISSF) senior men open category with a score of 548/600. Vishal Tanwar and Kamal Hassan, both of Uttar Pradesh, however, lead in air pistol (NR) in senior men and sub-junior men sections, respectively.
In air pistol (ISSF) event, Umesh Chandra of the ITBP in senior men and Ruby Tomar of Punjab in senior women section lead with score of 573/600 and 371/400 respectively. In air pistol (NR) senior women section, Pawandeep Kaur of Punjab lead with score of 341/400 while Pooja Malik of Delhi lead at 341/400 in junior women section.
Pushpa, Navneet for national camp: Ms Pushpa and Ms Navneet Kaur of Chandigarh has been selected for the national coaching camp in netball to be held at Cuttack, Orissa from January 8 to January 21, 2003. The selected players in the camp will then represent India in the Silver Jubilee International Netball Tournament and South Asian Netball Championship (women) to be held at Cuttack from January 23 to 27, 2003. Throwball meet: Holders Madhya Pradesh in both men and women sections secured their entry in the last four of the 25th Senior National Throwball Championship played here at Shishu Niketan Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22. Other teams which have reached semi-final include Orissa in men’s section and West Bengal and Karnataka in women’s section.
Judo championship: Jyotsna of Panjab University, Chandigarh, in below-63 kg weight section and Nidhi Bhardwaj in below-57 kg section emerged winners in the All-India Inter-University Judo Championship which began here today at University Gymnasium Hall. As many as 48 men teams and 40 women teams are taking part in this meet. The five day meet was inaugurated by Mr PS Puniha, IRS and Additional Commissioner, Income Tax, Chandigarh. In men’s section, Kirpal Singh of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, won the title in below-73 kg section.
