PGI’s budget

Chandigarh, December 20
At a meeting held in New Delhi, the Standing Finance Committee of the PGI has reportedly passed a budget of Rs 203 crore for 2003-04.

In an important development, the committee has also cleared the PGI's proposal for having 30 senior residents for the evening OPDs, along with 12 consultants of the additional professor rank, besides 10 class IV employees and three clerks. A new pay scale for the post of Registrar was also cleared. As many as 57 nurses would also be recruited.

The committee also allocated Rs 22 crore for planned expenditure and Rs 41 crore for non-planned expenditure for the current financial year. Initially Rs 94 crore had been approved for non-planned work and Rs 25 crore for planned work for the current year.

City skaters prove detractors wrong

Chandigarh, December 20
The city skaters, who struggled to obtain clearance from the Chandigarh Skating Association for playing in the 32nd National Games, clinched the roller-hockey gold medal in the men’s section. Roller skating has been introduced only this year in the games and the events are being held in the MG International Rink. The women’s team of Chandigarh, led by skipper Kriti Puri, won the bronze medal.

The Chandigarh men beat Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi on way to the title. They beat Haryana 7-3, Jammu and Kashmir 7-4, Andhra Pradesh 12-1, and Punjab 5-4. Arvind Chaudhary, Abhishek Rattan Pal and Rohit Randhawa were the top scorers for Chandigarh. The Chandigarh Roller Skaking Association had put nine senior skaters of the city under suspension and the trials were announced only after the intervention of the Chandigarh Olympic Association, on the last day for sending the entries for the games.

In the women’s category, Kriti, a Class X student of the Sector 9 Carmel Convent School, scored most of the goals in every match that Chandigarh played. In the match against Andhra Pradesh that Chandigarh won 7-3, Kriti scored all seven goals. In the match versus Jammu and Kashmir that her team won 7-2, Kriti scored six goals. Kriti scored 13 goals in the tournament and Ganeev scored two for Chandigarh.

Kriti had, earlier, represented India in the 2001 Asian Skating Meet at Taitung in Chinese Taipei.

Sports day

The annual sports day and prize-distribution function of the Sector 44 St Francis Xavier’s Convent School was held in the Sector 46 Sports Complex here yesterday. Ms Neelam Sawhney, Principal of the school, inspected the march past and read out the annual report of the school. Children exhibited their skills in taekwon-do and yoga.

For the pre-nursery students, there were 50 m races and the kindergarten students participated in frog jumping. Students of Classes I and II participated in the races with birthday caps on, where they also had to pick toffees.

Senior girls of the school took part 100 m races, while boys participated in a sack race and a three-legged race. There was a relay race for boys, while girls took part in a skipping race. Folk dances by students enthralled the guests.

The UT Sports Department has selected the following players for the basketball and kho-kho events in the 28th National Women’s Festival to be held at Ambala from January 8 to 11, 2003, the coaching camps for which will begin from December 26:

Basketball — Ranjita Rana, Mrinalini Nehra, Sandeep Kaur, Navdeep Kaur, Manjula Guleria, Kanchan, Hemlata, Kamaljit Brar, Mohinderjit Kaur, Harneet Kaur, Rajneet, Gurpreet Kaur, Poonam, Monika, Jaswinder Kaur, Gurjeet Kaur, Rajni and Amanpreet Kaur.

Kho-kho — Champa, Sunita Verma, Simran, Sunita Bhatt, Nisha, Kiran, Gurmeet Kaur, Laxmi, Rama, Kanwaljeet Kaur, Priya, Shiwani, Pooja, Pinky and Nisha.

The hockey and gymnastics squads of the UT girls, that are already in Hyderabad for the National Games, have been selected for the coaching camps.

St Joseph’s celebrates annual sports day

St Joseph's Senior Secondary School, Sector 44-D, celebrated their annual sports day today. Mr Y.R. Sachdeva, Regional Officer, CBSE, was the chief guest on the occasion. He was welcomed on arrival by Mr R.S. Grewal and Ms Rajinder Sethi, Ms Simar Grewal, chairman Principal and Director Kindergarten respectively, of the school.

The evening saw an engrossing display of races, dances, drills and a tug of war between former and present students of the school.

The function started with an impressive march past. It was followed by a novel drill, dumb charades, which demonstrated the techniques of playing various games. Dances performances enthralled the audience. Fusion, an interesting blend of western and Indian dance, was greatly appreciated. Sprints and relay races got a thunderous applause.

Dandia and bhangra performances kept the audience spellbound. However, Princes of light, an item that saw students dancing in colourful lights stole the show.

Lake parking lot fetches 17.85 lakh

The Sukhna Lake parking lot here today brought the Municipal Corporation Rs 17.85 lakh against a reserve price of Rs 12 lakh.

The Shantikunj parking lot was auctioned for double the reserve price at Rs 2 lakh. The corporation, however, again failed to auction the Bank Square parking lot in Sector 17. The reserve price for this parking was fixed at Rs 9.4 lakh.
