Bicycle tracks to come up along main roads
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 16
The Chandigarh Administration decided here today to build 10-foot-wide bicycle tracks on both sides of all main roads of the city. Rs 27 crore has been earmarked for this project that is to be spread over two financial years.

The tracks, for smooth traffic in the city, will come up according to the availability of space. Trees will not be cut to build the tracks that will be about a foot higher than the road level. Drains will be build to let rainwater wash onto the main roads, so, there will be no need to build additional road gullies along the bicycle tracks.

Streetlights will also be installed along the tracks, later. Wherever there is a scarcity of space due to a slow carriage-way being in the way, cyclists will have to pass through the slow carriage-way. The plan is to cover all major sector-dividing roads.

Chandigarh, December 16
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) today withdrew eight garbage bins from Sector 8 with an appeal to residents to dump garbage at the already notified designated places.

The MCC deployed uniformed employees of the Medical Officer Health and the Enforcement Wing at all 10 places where garbage used to be dumped earlier.

It was also announced through a loudspeaker, kept on a rickshaw, that those who do not dump their garbage near House no 69, opposite the electricity sub-station and near the rehri market, would be liable under Section 323 of the Municipal Act for a punishment of Rs 500 per offence.

Around 35 employees of the MCC have been deployed at the old dumping spots to direct people to dump garbage only at the notified places. They are also distributing pamphlets, regarding the notification, door-to-door.

The corporation today handed over 10 garbage carriers to the Residents' Welfare Association. Earlier, four carriers had been given for door-to-door collection of the garbage.

Local Councillor Chandermukhi Sharma, who had proposed that the MCC should withdraw garbage bins except from the designated places before the scheme was launched in Sector 15, told Chandigarh Tribune that out of 10 rickshaw-carts, six were for the garden waste and four for the kitchen waste. He, accompanied with MOH staff, also supervised the cleaning operations.

The MCC also pressed into service a mechanised sweeper to clean backlanes and three trucks to lift the garbage.

Mr Sharma and MCC officials have held several meetings with the Residents' Welfare Association and the Market Association to spread awareness about the scheme.

The Market Association also decided to send its representatives to coordinate with the Residents' Welfare Association to provide a single point contact for cleaning the area. The MCC has asked the residents to either send their garbage through the association or make their own arrangements.
