Maximum Syndics from Chatrath group
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 16
Contrary to popular expectations, no group has emerged as a clear single victor in the Panjab University Syndicate elections held here today.

Elections were held to the faculties of science, arts, languages, combined, medical and law.

The house has a number of old Syndics in the overall picture. Mr Gopal Krishan Chatrath has managed more seats than were being expected from his group. He has himself snatched the victory in the Law faculty. His close ally Ajaib Singh, also won in the Arts faculty. Other winners, including Mr S.C. Marriya, Principal, (arts), Prof S.S. Hundal (combined), Principal P.S. Sangha (languages), Mr Dinesh Talwar (law) and Mr S.S. Virdi (medical) are also from this group.

Winners from the rival faction which commands majority in the House include Prof R.D. Anand (Science), Prof Charanjit Chawla (combined) and Mr Ashok Goyal (combined). Mr Goyal secured the highest number of votes (40) among elections in all the faculties followed by Professor Chawla (39). Principal Usha Gupta (science faculty), Mr Lajpat Rai (arts) and Dr Satinder Dhillon (medical), are also understood to be from this group.

Other winners were Dr S.L. Sharma (languages faculty) and Mr Ashok Kumar Sachdeva (science).

Among all candidates only Mr Chatrath has repeated the contest in the Syndicate elections in the consecutive year. The other group did not repeat even a single candidate. Dr Deepak Manmohan, going by his standing in the Senate, has withdrawn from the election scenario by refusing to contest the election. However, his group candidates, including Ms Kuldeep Kaur Pannu and Mr S.S. Sangha, lost in the elections. Principal Satinder Dhillon emerged as the lone victor from his group.

Mr K.C. Shenmar was elected as the Dean, Faulty of Dairy, Animal Husbandry and Agriculture. Mr Anmol Rattan Sidhu was elected as Dean, Faculty of law. He was recently elected as the member of the Bar Council of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Some members said the university should have postponed the syndicate poll due to untimely death of Justice D.V. Sehgal, a Fellow.

The election process was by and large peaceful except for a controversy over a ‘torn ballot’ in the arts faculty. Mr Satya Pal Jain said the ballot should be counted as normal. Mr Satish Sharma said the vote be treated as invalid, which was accepted. The first time entrants in the Syndicate include Mr Lajpat Rai, Principal Marriya, Mr Sachdev, Ms Usha Gupta and Mr Talwar.

NK Jain told to appear in court
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, December 16
A local court has directed a former UT Home Secretary and senior Haryana bureaucrat, Mr N.K. Jain, to appear before the court till January 30 in the infamous Shimla girl rape case. The court of the UT Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Mr K.K. Goyal, today ordered for initiation of the proclamation offender proceeding against Mr N.K. Jain and directed him to appear before the court as he had failed to join the investigation.

The police had claimed that Mr N.K. Jain was the main accused in the rape case as he had hatched the conspiracy, along with the others, to implicate Mr M.K. Jain.

After the arrest of four accused, Ram Lal, Surinder Sharma, Narveer and Baldev, allegedly involved in the case, the police had issued a notice to Mr N.K. Jain to join the investigation. Later, following his expression of inability to join the investigation, the court had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him.

Claiming that “the police story was concocted, false and devoid of any merit,” he said he was being falsely implicated in the case at the behest of senior police officials.

Adding that he was ready to join the investigation and cooperate with the police and there was no chance of his tampering with the evidence or absconding, Mr N.K. Jain had moved an anticipatory bail plea in a local court. The plea was, however, dismissed by the UT Additional District and Sessions Judge, Ms Sneh Prashar, on December 11.

The police had given Mr M.K. Jain a clean chit in the case and said the supplementary challan would be filed against Mr N.K. Jain after he joined the investigation.
