Execution of projects cleared by NC govt stopped

Srinagar, December 4
The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered stoppage of work on projects on the banks of Dal Lake initiated by the Farooq Abdullah government and has set up a committee to probe the alleged illegal constructions.

The Mufti Mohammad Syed government yesterday ordered stopping of construction in the area around Dal Lake, designated as green belt, and set up a three-member committee to identify the officials, who had granted permission for the work in the prohibited area including Abdullah’s dream of secretariat-cum-residence.

Minister for Housing and Urban Development Ghulam Hassan Mir, while inspecting the deweeding and beautification works in and around the Dal Lake taken up by Lakes and Waterways authorities, formed the committee on the spot and asked it to report within two months.

Some of the other constructions violating prohibitory orders include 12 huts of a five-star hotel chain and an international standard golf course, Mir said.

On the revival of springs on the Dal periphery and reconstruction of parks, Mir said steps would be taken to ensure continuation of work on the Lake’s clean up drive. For this, he said regular supply of power would be maintained for the sewage treatment plant.

Platforms between houseboats would be removed and land identified for people displaced from the Dal Lake, Mir said. PTI

Awami League ‘expels’ MLA

Srinagar, December 4
Differences within the Jammu and Kashmir Awami League came to the fore today with its convener Liaqat Ali announcing that the party had decided to expel its MLA Usman Majid, a claim dismissed by party Chairman Mohammad Yousuf Parray.

In a statement issued here, Mr Ali said the decision to expel Mr Majid, party MLA from one Bandipore constituency in Baramula district, was taken at a meeting of the Awami League working committee which found him guilty of anti-party activities.

However, Mr Parray dismissed the expulsion of Mr Majid as a “fabrication” and a “rumour”.

“Usman Majid is a member of our party and will continue to remain so. I do not know anything about the working committee meeting”, Mr Parray said.

He however, declined to comment whether the party would initiate any action against Mr Ali, who had unsuccessfully contested the recent Assembly poll in the state from the Anantnag constituency. PTI

15 peaks thrown open to foreigners
Tribune News Service

Jammu, December 4
At least 15 peaks, which were closed for foreign expedition in the wake of the Kargil conflict in 1999, have been thrown open to foreign mountaineers.

A government of India communication received by the state government has said the ban on foreign expedition to 15 peaks in the Kargil sector has been lifted.

The peaks, including Nun, Kun, White Needle, and others, which have proved to be mountaineers’ delight since 1974 when Ladakh was thrown open to foreign tourists for the first time since 1947 would start receiving tourists from the next summer.

The decision to reopen the Kargil peaks to foreigners indicated that the tension which had mounted on the LoC in the area in 1999 has eased.

Once foreign mountaineers start arriving in Kargil for scaling different peaks it would help the state to earn the much needed foreign exchange, according to a senior functionary of the Tourism Department.

Official sources said the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, was happy on this development as he has been keen to promote winter tourism from the next month in the Kashmir valley. The Chief Minister has asked the Tourism Department authorities to prepare a plan for attracting tourists not only from different states but from foreign countries for skiing in Gulmarg.

Police hand suspected in ‘suicide’
Tribune News Service

Jammu, December 4
“From the healing touch to the heater touch.” This is the general refrain of people on the death of a civilian, Abdul Hamid Wani, in mysterious circumstances at Nowgam police station, near the Chief Minister’s house, on December 2.

The SHO concerned had earlier been involved in the Pathribal and Brakpora firing in which 13 civilians had been killed in 2000.

Supporters of the Mufti cannot understand why a police officer with a tainted record was allowed to remain at a sensitive police station.

A senior police officer said despite the “bad name” earned by the SHO for mishandling situation in areas where he had been posted prior to his transfer to Nowgam indicated that he continued to enjoy the patronage of the police top brass.

The officer, wishing to remain unidentified, said: “We expected the Chief Minister to sideline 15 police officers, from the SHO to the gazetted rank, which would have helped in the revamping of the police structure and giving a healing touch to people.”

He said for the past month police officers and those in the civil secretariat, besides other government departments, had been in a state of “inertia” as “we are not sure about our future postings.”

Though the government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and a fresh autopsy has been conducted, the attachment of the SHO to the police lines might not assuage the feelings of the people.

The police claims that Wani had committed suicide by strangulating himself with a heater wire. A senior government functionary, however, said the circumstances that forced him to commit suicide should be probed.
