Health facilities for the poor

The Chandigarh Administration is aiming to provide basic health services to the three lakh plus under-privileged people, living in slums of the city by using mobile health vans, said the UT Administrator, Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), while speaking at a function organised in Punjab Raj Bhavan here today. The Narain Dharmarth Aushdhalaya Trust donated an ambulance for the Chandigarh Red Cross on the occasion.

General Jacob said Chandigarh had one of the best health infrastructures, but it was imperative to provide basic health services to the people living in the slums. He said a dental van, donated by the Rotary Club, was visiting the slums regularly. The ambulance donated today would be utilised to provide basic health services to the residents of the slums, he said.

The Principal Post Master General, Mr Vijay Bhushan, who is also a trustee, informed the gathering about the history of the trust and said Lala Narian Dutt was a prominent freedom fighter and a close associate of Pandit Moti Lal Nehru and Dr Shayma Prasad Mukherji. He said the trust was formed in 1965.

Patients’ number swells in evening OPDs

The number of patients at the three-day old evening OPDs at the PGI, continues to increase. A total of 71 patients were treated by 11 consultant doctors, here today.

Apart from the fact that majority of those availing the evening OPDs facility comprises service class, it is the faculties of internal medicine , ENT and ophthalmology, which witness the heaviest rush. Today there were a total of 20 patients in the internal medicine, 18 in eye, 15 in ENT, seven in gynaecology, six in surgery and five in paediatrics evening OPDs.

With the senior and junior resident doctors staying away from the evening OPDs, it is the consultants who have made it possible for the PGI administration to meet the December 2 deadline as per the wishes of the Union Health Minister, Mr Shatrughan Sinha.

PU athletics meet from Dec 6

Chandigarh, December 4
The annual athletic meet of Panjab University, Chandigarh will be held from December 6 to 8 on the university campus. According to the university sources many affiliated colleges of the university will participate in this three-day meet. About 500 athletes both in boys and girls sections, will take part in this meet.

The university will also hold the inter-college volleyball ‘B’ division on December 10. The university will hold inter-college competitions like rifle shooting, hockey, kabaddi, and tennis in January, 2002.

Meanwhile, PU authorities also announced Panjab University women basketball team which will take part in the North Zone Inter-varsity Basketball championship going to begin at Panjabi University, Patiala, from December 6. The team will have Balwinder Kaur of DAV College, Hoshiarpur as skipper.

The team is : Mandeep Brar (Panjab University, Chandigarh), Balwinder Kaur, Rajwinder Kaur and Kamaljit Kaur (all from DAV College, Hoshiarpur), Manpreet Kaur, Gaganpreet Kaur, Kamaljit Kaur and Kiran (all from Government College for Women, Ludhiana), Mohinderjeet Kaur (Government College for Girls, Kotkapura), Ranjeeta (Government College for Girls, Sector 11), Sukhpreet Kaur (Dashmesh Girls College, Badal, Muktsar), and Manjula Guleria (MCM DAV College, Sector 36, Chandigarh). Mr MM Malhan, will accompany the team as coach-cum-manager.

Snooker meet

Gagandeep Singh of Ambala created a flutter when he overpowered Sunny Bhalla 3-2 with scores being 38-61, 32-55, 68-14, 54-43, 63-56 in the senior snooker section. Sunny Bhalla, the defending champion, won in two frames, but Gagandeep bounced back to bag the remaining frames. He made break of 33 in the third frame. In the deciding frame, Sunny Bhalla was leading by 30 points but then Gagan showed his temperament and clinched the match by potting the black ball.

In another tie, Mani defeated Rahul, 68-43, 50-05, 48-63, 61-36. Deepak Goyal defeated Jaswinder 59-48, 61-41, 85-14. Naveen defeated Rajeev 51-28, 57-25, 71-50.

Varinder Singh to be SSP (HQ)

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has cleared the name of Mr Varinder Singh, a UT-cadre officer of 1992-batch, for the post of the Senior Superintendent of Police (Headquarters). The Chandigarh Administration received the orders here today.
