181 donate blood

Chandigarh: More than 180 staff and students of Shaheed Udham Singh College of Engineering and Technology donated blood at a camp organised on the college campus here on Tuesday. The camp, which was inaugurated by Mr J.S. Sidhu, chairman of the college management committee, and organised by the NCC, is the third in memory of Shaheed Udham Singh. TNS

Jhuggis in Janata Colony demolished

Hundreds of illegal jhuggis in the Sector 25 Janata Colony were razed to the ground as part of a massive demolition drive this morning. A large number of the people residing there have been allotted dwelling units, while the others were illegal.

As per the scheme of the Chandigarh Administration, people who were on the voters’ list before December 8, 1996, were to be considered for allotment under the rehabilitation policy.

Those who were eligible were allotted units. The others had to go.

The land belongs to the Chandigarh Administration and has to be put to commercial use. A team of the Chandigarh Administration led by the Enforcement Magistrate, Mr Ishwar Singh, reached the spot this morning. He gave time to the jhuggi-dwellers to remove their belongings.

A heavy posse of policemen had been called in and the area was cordoned off .

4.5 cr for roads

Major roads of Industrial Area, Phase I and II, will see their condition improved within four months after two decades with the Chandigarh Administration agreeing to persistent demands of the MCC Mayor, Ms Lalit Joshi, to take them over once for recarpeting and re-strengthening. This was informed here yesterday by Ms Joshi while talking to reporters.

She said the MC had been informed about the Chandigarh Administration agreeing to spend Rs 4.5 crore for the purpose in a letter sent by the Chief Engineer, Chandigarh Administration, Mr Puranjeet Singh.

12 SIs shifted

The Inspector-General of Police, Chandigarh, today ordered the transfers of the following 12 Sub-Inspectors and an Assistant Sub-Inspector, according to an official spokesman.

SI Raghbir Singh transferred from the Public Grievances Cell to the police post, Bapu Dham; SI Gulshan Kumar from the police post, Bapu Dham, to the police post, ISBT, Sector 17; SI Bhupinder Singh from the police post, ISBT, to the Sector 39 police station; SI Ved Parkash from the police post, Burail, to the Economic Offences Wing; SI Udhya Pal from the Sector 11 police station to the police post, Burail; SI Sukhwinder Singh from the EOW to the Sector 11 police station; SI Jaswinder Kumar from the Child Support Unit to Traffic; SI Kuldeep Kaur from Traffic to the Child Support unit; SI Janak Singh to the Sector 22 police post; SI Jarnail Singh from the Sector 22 police post to the EOW; SI Pargat Singh from the CIA to the police post, Darwa, and SI Jaswinder Singh from the police post, Darwa, to the Sector 3 police station. ASI Naveen Sharma has been shifted from Mani Majra police station to the Sector 39 police station.
