Students put art on fabric
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, November 22
“Students have done well this time. The designs on bedsheets, bedcovers, tablecloth and ‘sarees’ are mind-blowing,” said visitors to the tenth Annual Exhibition of Textile Paintings and Printing by students of Sobha Singh Arts College. Prof N.P. Dhanda, director of the college, said, each year, the college held this exhibition on the birth anniversary of Sardar Sobha Singh.

Dr Varinder Kaur Thind, Principal of the Khalsa College for Women, inaugurated the exhibition on the arts college premises here today, where it will be on till November 24. The timings for visitors are 11 am to 7 pm each day.

Ms Renu Chopra, Principal of the arts college, said about 30 students were exhibiting their works of painting on house linen and baby’s clothes. The visitors found the designs and colours so appealing that many even placed orders to buy the items, though students would not want to part with their works of art. Students of the college learn spray painting, dry-brush touch, water-colour painting, bold touching, block printing and stenciling and use these techniques creatively to produce stunning works.

“Ms Balwanti Sood, a student of the college for the past 20 years, is over 75. She still has a steady hand and she has even exhibited a few ‘sarees’ painted by her. Since she is not keeping well, she works mostly from home. Many prominent women of the city, like Ms Neelam Oswal, Ms Parveen Khurana, Ms Vaishali Thapar and Dr Saroj Thakur had joined the college,” said Ms Chopra.
