PRINCIPALSPEAK
Success is doing what you enjoy

When I sat down to write my talk I thought why am I needed to speak to the children about stress management for I know of no other generation who takes away so much of my mental stress. When I come to school, a very special boy comes running and with a little shy smile wishes me good morning. His enthusiasm makes me forget my problems. A smile is a big stress reliever.

I share with you a story of Kevin. We teachers would call him Kevin ‘Slow’. He took time to learn his lessons and never came first in races, but he loved basketball. He liked to stand in a certain spot near the free throw line and shoot baskets. He would keep throwing the ball till he managed to put in into the loop.

Their last game of the season was with one of the best teams. Towards the end of the game Kevin’s team stood 30 points behind their opponents. Suddenly, Kevin’s teammate called time out and said to the coach that Kevin has never made a basket and that he should be allowed. Kevin’s team kept passing the ball to him.

His first short bounced but missed. The other team swiped the ball. As soon as Kevin’s team had the ball they again passed the ball to him, but Kevin missed again. Soon the other team had the ball and they too started passing the ball to Kevin. People soon figured out what was happening. The whole crowd started cheering Kevin. Finally, the ball took a miraculous turn and Kevin managed a basket. Kevin, excited, started shouting ‘I won!’ The clock ticked and the best team remained undefeated. But everyone left the play field feeling a winner.

Life is all about knowing what you are good at, risk that asset to be different from the rest. Kevin wasn’t standing first in class, he was not winning the Olympiads, but he won the game of his choice, he knew his baseline.

I can sight the examples of many in the school who carved niches for themselves, inspite of not giving exemplary performances in the exams. Good results in exams are a big part of your personality, but a small part of your life. Come out of the phobia of exams and come first in life where it matters.

Nothing beats stress better than success and success is doing what you enjoy.
