British library membership from Dec 1
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, November 17
The city residents, who have been waiting since a year to become a member of the British Library, the wait is finally going to be over for them. For the library will be opening its membership on December 1, according Mr Sushant Banerjee, manager of the Chandigarh branch, in Sector 8 here.

The library is going to add another 1500 new members to its existing strength. However, the total strength is likely exceed 4000 members as the rate of renewal is estimated as 75 per cent of the previous number.

“This year’s renewal rate has shown a tremendous increase over last year’s which was only 49 per cent,” said Mr Banerjee, adding that the renewal rate was never cent percent for any library as the majority of the members included students and people with transferable jobs.

Talking about the future plans, Mr Banerjee informed that the library was going to revamped in a big way in the coming year. “We are going to open an English Language Teaching (ELT) section along with a self development section,” he said.

Besides the authorities have decided to keep the library open for six days a week, instead of five days. “Earlier we used to be closed for two days in a week but from now on we are going to be open on Mondays as well,” said Mr Banerjee.

But the major change the library is going to face this year is change of its location. As the space available is not enough to keep pace with the upgradation plan we have in pipeline, the British Council is also looking for a larger building in the city. “I have already seen a few places myself and to finalise the matter Ms Morna Nance, Deputy Director, British Council India and Mr P Jairajan, Head of Library in India, are coming down to the city on November 21,” he said.

The idea to change the location happened as there was a plan to introduce a Children Section which eventually could not materialise due to lack of space. “The Administration has finally given their nod to use the basement of the building for the library’s use but a children’s section can not be put up in the basement and hence we are waiting for a bigger place,” said Mr Banerjee.

Many people even from far flung places in Punjab will have access ti a certain section of the library collection as it is going to introduce ‘Remote Access ‘ online service. “We are already providing about 100 dictionaries, journals and magazines through online service and by the end of 2005, we are planning to reach out to more than three lakhs of people in India,” said Mr Banerjee.

AMID the residences of Sector 41, lies the imposing looking building of Ajit Karam Singh International School. At closer look, it is not the building that inspires awe, butwhat it stands for - a symbol quality education. Eversince its inception in 1983 by National Educational Development Trust in 1983, the school has been faithfully following the dream of one of the greatest educationists of all time - late Ms.Ajit Karam Singh.

The vision and efforts of late Ajit Karam Singh , the founder, took shape as International Public School - an institute to develop the children in such a way so as to make them morally upright, intellectually well informed, socially concerned, emotionally balanced and physically developed.

The name of the school was later changed to Ajit Karam Singh International Public School in the fond memory of the founder, but the goal remained the same. About 1500 students under the guidance of 54 staff members have been following the guidelines set by its founder. The school now imparts education to the students from pre nursery to class X with a plan to add Plus II in commerce and medial and non medical streams from the next session.

AKSIPS is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for the All India Secondary School Examination and the All India Senior Secondary School Examination under the new pattern of 10+ 2. Overall, the education ladder consists of three years of pre -primary,eight years of primary and upper primary, two years of secondary and two years of senior secondary education.

Equipped with audio visual aids and computers, the management authority has left no stone unturned to make learning a pleasurable experience for all. But the main strength of the school remains in its participatory nature of teaching. Keeping parallel with academic part, the school has formulated a sound programme of physical education that includes - gymnastics, yoga, karate, aerobics, table tennis and host of outdoor games.

No education is complete without imbibing a sense of social responsibility. AKSIPS has set up an example in this direction by adopting Kajheri Night School in which the Trust has not only appointed two permanent teachers but provides a chance to their own students to work towards the upliftment of the under privileged children.

‘We develop personality through interactive education’

Jagjit ShekhonMRS. Jagjit Shekhon believes in tackling problems head on. So be it a personal problem or academic, one can head straight to her room for a heart to heart. And true to her word, she keeps her door open to all, ready to share one's problems and ready with suggestions if saught. This attitude Mrs. Sekhon, Principal of AKSIPS has made the school atmoshphere open and free, making the education system more interactive, involving students, teachers and parents on the same platform.

Geetika Goyal, class VIII-B

Shija Mahajan, class IX-C

On education system:

Our education system is too theoritical which is not enough to develop a child's overall personality. And to achieve that the teaching community has to open itself to the students and make education more interactive so that the children can openly discuss their problems and overcome their short coming.

On the counselling system

With the rise of nuclear family system in our society, more and more problems are cropping up in households, and affecting the academic side of the child in the bargain. So having a proper counselling cell in each school has resumed more significance as education can thrive only through a sound mind.

On the tution menace

With high level comeptitions rulling the life, little wonder that almost everyone are going to get as much extra help as they can get. But if the parents insists on regularity and keeps tab on their progress, they would not have to spend thousands of rupess on tutions. And it is not only the money aspect which is bad about tutions but the long hours spent on them, have drastically reduced time limit for the students to pursue their creative side.

On the future plan of school

AKSIPS is going expand itself with a big bang, for the school is not just upgrading itself to Plus 2 standard in commerce, medical and non medical, butwe are adding two more schools in the next year - one in Chandigarh and another one in Mohali. Infact the Trust propeses to have ten more AKSIPS within the next ten years, not only in the city but in the remote areas on Punjab as well. — PR

My school

Lapsy, class x-B

I feel proud to be one of the many lucky students who are studying in this prestigious institude AKSIPS.

My school has always tried to live upto the tradition of giving quality education and standing up strongly by its motto - "education is life'. Here education does not mean just bookish knowledge but an all round development through active participation in extra carricular activities liker debate, declamation, summer workshop, quiz and excurssion which prevent the school routine from becoming monotonous.

The best part of my school is that, the students and teachers are not two separate entities, strictly separated by formalities but shares a commonness and intimacy which makes the entire school into a huge family. The teachers are strict disciplinarian, loving and a source of inspiratuion at the same time.

I am sure under the able guidance of the management, my school will continue to receive many more laurels in the days to come.

Poems by students

Our scientists

Scientists told us that

Air is made of gasses

earth is made up of rocks

Scientists told us that

Galaxy is made up of stars

Mater is made up of atoms

Scientists told us that

Solar system is made of planets

But they never told us that

What is the God made of

Because they do not know it

—Gurleen, class VI-A

Destiny

Watch your words

they become actions

Watch your actions

they become habits

Watch your habits

they become your character

Watch your character

It becomes your destiny

Suman Preet Singh, —Class VI-A

Friendship

Life is sad without

A friend

As home is lonely

Without a mother

As church is silent

Without a prayer

And a class is joy

Without a teacher

true friends are

Like diamonds

costly rich and rare

False friends are like leaves

found everywhere

Friendship is like a flower

That blooms in the sun and shade

A friend knows its value

And would never let it fade

—Kiran, class VI-A

Thoughts

Patience is the art of hoping

Kindness is the great virtue

Simplicity is the peak of civilization

Pride goes before a fall

Hate the sin not the sinner

Do good have good

All that glitters is not gold

Slow and steady wins the race

Our attitudes determine our attitudes

Working together is success

Man propose God disposes

Necessity is the mother of inventiob

A stitch in time saves nine

—Chandni , class VI-A

Kindness

Always be good

Always be kind

Always remember

This is your mind

If you will be glad

If you will be sad

So always be kind

I hope you will keep

This in your mind
