Teams arrive amidst tight security
Baroda, November 16 The two teams, locked 2-2 in the seven-match series, arrived by road from Ahmedabad and were confined to the comforts of their hotel after the four-hour drive. Both the teams will have net practice tomorrow morning. Meanwhile, former stumper Kiran More, secretary of Baroda Cricket Association, said all arrangements had been completed for the match and expressed confidence that it would go off smoothly. “There is nothing to worry about the security situation. We don’t expect any crowd disturbance here,” More, who is also a national selector, said. With crowd trouble affecting three of the four one-day internationals between India and West Indies, police has taken stringent steps to prevent spectators from throwing objects on the ground and check illegal entry of fans in the stadium for the fifth match here on Monday. Special nets would be installed at the stadium to prevent objects from landing on the field during the match, city police commissioner D D Tuteja told PTI today. There were disturbances by a section of the crowd during the matches at Rajkot, Nagpur and Jamshedpur. Tuteja said police have also installed low intensity electricity wires around a small area of the stadium adjacent to nearby Undera village to check illegal entry into the stadium, as fans in the past had tried to gain entry into the stadium. When asked if installation of wires could prove fatal, Tuteja said prior announcements have been made in this regard and the wires will carry low intensity current. The BCCI has asked the staging centres to take all possible precautionary measures to avoid crowd trouble. The International Cricket Council’s threat to withdraw international status from venues which fail to meet security guidelines has put the board under more pressure. The Gujarat government has provided seven companies of Special Reserve Police instead of three sought by the local administration, to prevent any untoward incident. Besides, four deputy superintendents of police, eight assistant commissioners, 23 police inspectors, 80 sub-inspectors would also be deployed at the stadium, he said. The Baroda Cricket Association will deploy 300 security personnel at the gates, BCA secretary Kiran More told PTI, adding, security of both the players and the spectators was of paramount importance to the organisers. Policemen and women in plain clothes at the stadium will check mischievous elements, Tuteja said, adding, police personnel would also be present at the boundary line facing the crowd. To enter the stadium the spectators will have to pass through metal detectors installed at 11 gates. After first check they will again be subjected to metal detectors before being allowed inside, Tuteja said. Close circuit TVs have been installed for monitoring and volunteers, with special badges, will look for trouble makers. The BCA secretary Samarjeetsingh Gaekwad said that fans will not be allowed to carry anything inside the stadium. Strict security arrangements have been made at the hotel where both the teams are staying and visitors record was also being maintained. For the first time, the BCA has taken additional insurance cover of Rs 1.90 crore for the match and has taken out a comprehensive policy, covering rioting and terrorist attack and any natural calamity. Bengal
take on Himachal
Kolkata, November 16 The hosts, who failed to clinch any point against Rajasthan in their lung opener at the same venue Eden Gardens four days back, will be looking forward to open their account against their inexperienced rivals to stay afloat in the tournament being held under a new format and points system. With the inclement weather standing in the way of Rajasthan first innings being completed, none of the teams were awarded any point. Leading the Bengal batting will be Test discard wickekeeper batsman Deep Dasgupta, who is eyeing a place in the Indian team for the forthcoming New Zealand trip, and fellow young opener Amitava Chakraborty, who hit a chanceless 90 in the drawn encounter against Rajasthan.

Ferrero stings Moya Shahghai, November 16 Ferrero, who will finish in the world’s top five for the second consecutive year, proved too consistent from the baseline in a match that thrilled the near-capacity crowd at Shanghai’s New International Expo Centre. The man nicknamed the “Mosquito” for his tenacity from the back of the court took the semi-final with a rare foray into the net on his first match point, hitting a delicate drop volley winner that brought Moya to his knees. Ferrero will pocket more than $ 1.3 million for the tournament if he wins tomorrow’s final against either Australian Lleyton Hewitt or Switzerland’s Roger Federer, but more importantly he could climb to a career high world ranking of number three. Moya, who had gone into the semi-final undefeated after three round robin victories over world number one Hewitt, number three Marat Safin and countryman Albert Costa, took the first set with an ace at 6-7 in the tie breaker. Ferrero had looked in control of the first set after breaking to go up 4-2, but then double-faulted on break point while trying to serve it out at 5-3. The normally unflappable Ferrero showed his disgust by bouncing his racquet. He had another chance to take the set at 6-5 in the tie- reak, but he hit an off-forehand close to the line, which was called out. With slumped shoulders, Ferrero argued with the umpire as he changed ends, hit a forehand long to go 6-7, then watched a pumped-up Moya serve an ace to take the set. However, Ferrero regrouped quickly for the second set, breaking Moya in the first game and holding his serve throughout to take it 6-4. In the third, Ferrero saved a break point in the second game, but from then on piled the pressure on Moya’s serve, eventually breaking him at 3-3 on his fifth break point. Ferrero’s win stretches his career win-loss record over Moya to 7-2. Today’s match was a near-replay of their most recent encounter at the final of the Hong Kong Open in September, which Ferrero won 6-3 1-6 7-6 (7/4). In the other semi-final, Hewitt will take on Federer in a battle of the tournament’s two youngest players. More than $ 3.7 million is on offer at the season- ending Masters Cup, which is open to only the top eight players in the world.

Silveira fashions Dempo win Margao, November 16 With the win, Dempo, who lost to Vasco twice in the professional league in the last edition, took their sweet revenge. Dempo dominated the first half after coming close to scoring thrice. They scored the all important goal in the 75th minute through Silveira who was taken on loan from Fransa. Defender Melvin Rodrigues moved up to send a cross from the side line to the unmarked Silveira, who headed home to find the far post. Silveira, who was joint highest scorer in the professional league, could have increased the lead one minute later but his well directed shot was thwarted by keeper Rogerio Ramos. Vasco failed to combine as a team in the first half but found their rhythm in the second half and made inroads in the rival half with a barrage of raids through striker Rui Wanderley Weis and Marcos Pereira. But keeper Francis Fernandes stood firm under the bar to deny Marcos and Seby Dias from taking the lead. Vasco kept on the pressure but were unlucky thrice when woodwork came to the rescue of Dempo, denying Rui Wanderley Weis, Marcose and Nitin Pradhan as their tries hit the cross bar. The first half was devoid of much action. Dempo who controlled the midfield failed to get past the rival defence in the initial stage. Vasco’s first move came in the 28th minute when a Lazarus Fernandes cross from the right to Mario Soares was saved by keeper Ramos, who dived full length to put out the ball for an abortive corner. Dempo nearly succeeded in taking the lead one minute before interval when medio Johnny D’cruz’s stiff grounder was collected by Ramos on the second attempt. After change of ends, Vasco got into groove and made barrage of raids in the rival citadel. First Jules Alberto Dias who was off colour today failed to connect a header off a free kick taken by Nitin Pradhan. A minute later, Marcos Pereira Wea’s shot was collected by Francis Fernandes off a pass from Weis. With Vasco maintaining the pressure, a goal looked imminent but luck did not favour Vasco as woodwork came to Dempo’s rescue thrice when Weis, Marcos and Nitin hit the bar. Dempo, who survived these close shaves, scored the all important goal against the run of play. Defender Melvin Fernandes, who moved upon reaching the rival box, squared the ball to Francis Silveira who was unmarked. He headed home into the empty net to find the far post. PTI |

Mr Randhawa said all tournaments at the national and international level were on Astro-turf, it could prove vital for the development of the game if the facility is provided at the grassroots. The region had produced a good number of players and by using the existing facility we will be able to produce more players, asserted Randhawa. When contacted Dr S.P. Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the university said the question of using the Astro-turf does not arise till they got the clearance certificate. He said according to the norms a meeting was called only after a 21-day notice. Prior to this a report of the technical committee is necessary, which would come from London.
