Simla Youngs beat Heroes

New Delhi, November 5
Simla Youngs beat Garhwal Heroes 6-5 via tie-breaker in a close match of the Lt Governor’s Cup Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium on Monday.

The teams were locked one-all at the end of the regulation time and the sudden death tie-breaker rule had to be enforced to break the deadlock.

Inside-left Manish put Simla Youngs ahead. In the second half, defender Parveen Kumar sent a long-ranger into the net to equalise for Heroes. In the tie-breaker Anil Rawat, Manish, Budhraj, Kuldeep Sigh and Manoj Choudhary found the mark for Simla Youngs while Raj Kumar, Satish Kumar, Chiranjiv Lal and Amarjit were the marksmen of Heroes.

Shahdara beat former DSA League champions Moghuls 3-0 to enter the quarter-final. Neeraj Chaudhary opened the account for Shahdara. Bhupinder Thakur and Rajesh Sinha accounted for the other two goals.

Wednesday’s fixtures: Air Force, Palam vs Indian Nationals (12.45 p m); City Club vs Moonlight (3 pm)—Ambedkar Stadium.

DAV Pushpanjali beat Vidya Bharati Public School, Rohini 25-8, 25-14, 25-13 to lift the title in the CBSE Volleyball Tournament for Under-16 boys and girls in the Cluster X section at the Jain Bharati Mrigavati Vidyalaya court at Alipur.

Salwan Public School, Rajender Nagar, clinched the top spot in the girls section, defeating Jain Bharati Mrigavati Vidyalaya 25-21, 25-23, 15-12.

Vipin Mann of Jain Bharti Mrigavati Vidyalaya, Sachin of DAV Pushpanjali, Jyoti Rana of Jain Bharti and Anu Shree were declared the best upcoming players.

Asian Games gold medallist in wrestling Satpal gave away the prizes. Sports Authority of India regional director Shakti Sagar was the guest of honour at the final. Jain Bharti school principal Mrs V B Sood thanked the CBSE and the Delhi State Volleyball Association for the smooth conduct of the tournament.

A strokeful 62, studded with ten fours and one six, by Nitin Kumar and a hattrick by medium pacer Pradeep Banerjee, who claimed four wickets for 14 runs, were the highlights of Pradeep Banerjee XI’s seven-wicket victory against Himmat Saini XI in the annual cricket match of DDCA Staff Members played at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground on Monday.

Nitin Kumar was adjudged the best all rounder while Pradeep Banerjee got the best bowler award. Himmat Saini was adjudged the best batsman.

Scores: Himmat Saini XI: 142 all out in 26 overs (Himmat Saini 39, 2x4, 56b; Jeevan Singh 43, 3x6, 3x4, 36b, Pradeep Banerjee 4 for 14, Om Prakash 3 for 22, Nitin 1 for 17, Ravi Shanker 1 for 37). Himmat Saini and Jeevan put on 72 runs for the first wicket in 13.4 overs after the Saini XI struggled at nine for 48.

Pradeep Banerjee XI: 143 for 3 in 15.3 overs (Nitin Kumar 62 n o, 10x4, 1x6, 40b; Om Prakash 31, 4x4, 1x6, 31b, CK Bhardwaj 1 for 9, Santosh 1 for 42).

Rajiv Gandhi Cricket

Twentyeight top teams, divided into four pools, will participate in the first Rajiv Gandhi Memorial North Delhi Cricket League Tournament, to be held at different grounds in Delhi from November 10. The inaugural match will be played at the Guru Gobind Singh College ground, Pitampura.

Leading clubs like Malviya, K N Colts, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Scindia India, Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan, Montfort School, Ravindra Public School, Delhi Police Cricket team, West Delhi Cricket Academy, S P Cricket Academy, Delhi Colts, DDCA Employees Club, S B Youth, LIC, MCD, Aiport Authority of India, Pelicans, Young Friends and Pahari Dhiraj Gymkhana have confirmed their participation.

Ram Babu Gupta co-ordinator

Former Test umpire and treasurer of the Delhi and District Cricket Association, Dr Ram Babu Gupta, has been appointed co-ordinator of the Indian team for the one-day series for the TVS Cup against West Indies, starting on Wednesday. According to Mr C K Khanna, vice-chairman of the National Cricket Academy, Ram Babu Gupta was also the co-ordinator of the Indian team for the just-concluded Test series.

Jindal Power and Steel beat South Delhi by eight goals to four and a half to lift the Pizza Hut Baroda Cup Polo Tournament title at the Jaipur Polo ground.

In an exhibition match, The Italians beat The Stuffed Crust in a 14-goal match. Eleven teams, including South Delhi, Jindal Steel and Power, Army Blue and Aravali Polo participated in the 12-goal Baroda Cup.

Sangramsinh Pratapsinh Gaedwak gave away the prizes. The prize distribution function was embellished with a scintillating performance by the Vasant Valley School band.
