India clinch series with 8 wkt win
Chennai, October 20 Chasing just 81 runs for victory after West Indies were bundled out for 229 in their second innings, India reached the target in 21.1 overs to win the second consecutive match inside four days. Coming on the heels of a record innings and 112-run win in the first Test in Mumbai, the victory today was just the second instance when India had defeated West Indies in back-to-back Test matches. It was also only the third series victory for India against the West Indies in the 17 they have played so far, the previous two coming in 1970-71 in West Indies and in 1978-79 at home. The victory was never in doubt once West Indies failed to set a decent target for the home team but West Indian skipper Carl Hooper managed to claim two consolation wickets by dismissing opening batsmen Virender Sehwag (33) and Sanjay Bangar (20). Sachin Tendulkar, who remained unbeaten on 16 in the company of Rahul Dravid on six, hit off the winning runs when he took a three against Gareth Breese. Slight drizzle threatened to delay India’s celebrations but the two teams continued to play and the home team, which had gained a 149-run first innings lead, finished the match midway into the second session. West Indies resistance, which looked impressive yesterday, collapsed the moment overnight batsman and top-scorer Ramnaresh Sarwan was dismissed by Zaheer Khan this morning. Resuming at their overnight 186 for four, West Indies progressed to 208 before Zaheer Khan struck in his very first over of the day. Sarwan, who had batted with a lot of determination, was rendered helpless by a delivery that kept low and straightened after pitching and was trapped plumb in front of the wicket. Sarwan, who batted for five hours for his 78-run knock hitting four fours and two sixes, wore a dejected look as he walked back to pavilion after missing yet another opportunity to complete his maiden Test century. That triggered an all too familiar collapse as West Indies lost their remaining five wickets for just 21 runs. Harbhajan Singh claimed three wickets in five balls to finish with four wickets for 79 runs. He dismissed Ryan Hinds and Gareth Breese with the first two balls of his over before trapping Mervyn Dillon leg before wicket on the fifth delivery in a controversial decision. Harbhajan Singh, who had taken three wickets in the first innings apart from making a cameo 37, was declared the Man of the Match. The off-spinner is the top wicket-taker in this calendar year, having taken 53 wickets from 10 Tests. But Harbhajan Singh was not the only one to hog the limelight. Zaheer Khan chipped in with three wickets this morning to make an equally important contribution. West Indian innings folded 46 minutes before lunch with Zaheer Khan uprooting the off-stump of Jermaine Lawson. The Indians were 28 without loss at lunch with Virender Sehwag batting on 15 and Sanjay Bangar on 10. Sehwag, celebrating his 24th birthday, hit a 30-ball 33 which included a huge six off Gareth Breese. Sehwag was the first one to go, deceived by the flight of Hooper’s delivery to be stumped by Ridley Jacobs when the total was 50. Bangar followed him 11 runs later, caught by Chris Gayle in the slips. Tendulkar and Dravid, who was dropped off the first ball he faced, then took India to their target without any further hiccup. The victory was the 13th for Sourav Ganguly as captain, just one away from Mohammad Azharuddin’s record of 14. Ganguly was injured today in the field when he collided with Anil Kumble as they both went for a catch of Pedro Collins at deep mid-wicket. Ganguly had to be carried off in a stretcher and was later diagnosed to be suffering from lower back injury. Doctors said it would have been difficult for him to bat in the Indian second innings today but his services were not required. He was expected to be fit for the third Test starting in Kolkata on October 30. Ravi Shastri Victory became a formality for India after Ramnaresh Sarwan was dismissed on the fourth morning. The West Indies batting lacks depth, as has been evident in both the Tests, and Sarwan’s dismissal triggered off a collapse that left India very few to score to seal the Test series. With rain in the air, the Indian batsmen showed justifiable haste in reaching the target of 81, not wanting to leave it to chance and the weather. But even in reaching this paltry total, it was clear that had the West Indies scored and set a target of 200-225, this Test could have been much, much closer. There was turn, bite and bounce for Hooper and Breese, but there were few runs to defend. Sarwan showed a lot of class in his batting in the second innings, but he played a lone hand in the fight back. Till he was at the wicket, the West Indies had a chance because he seemed unfazed by the spinners. It took a clever bowling change by Ganguly, and fine delivery from Zaheer Khan to get this young man back into the pavilion. Zaheer’s ability to get reverse swing with the old ball makes him a dangerous customer for even a well set batsman, and Sarwan was leg before playing across the line. I thought Zaheer was outstanding in this spell, pitching the ball up, getting it to swing both ways and bowling yorkers at will. It is heartening to see an Indian fast bowler running in hard and making his effort count in the second innings on tracks which help largely the spinners. A lot of credit for this must also go to the Indian captain who has handled this young man so well. The other two to capture attention were Harbhajan Singh and Parthiv Patel. The off-spinner showed his wicket-taking propensity on a wearing wicket once again by claiming four in the second innings this time. Three of these came in one over, which shows that once he gets a breakthrough, he smells blood and becomes lethal. Parthiv Patel impresses me with every outing. He was top class again today, the catch to dismiss Jacobs was a marvel. It is never easy to keep to spinners like Kumble and Harbhajan when the wicket is breaking up and the turn and bounce is unpredictable. But Parthiv shows both fine technique and courage. Those, in my book, are sterling virtues. The West Indies go to Kolkata with the series decided. But they can look back at Chennai and find some positives. The bowling was far more disciplined, with Dillon being the pick, and the batsmen showed a far more forthright approach in the second innings. Had they scored a few more runs in the first innings, and the fielding not been ragged, allowing India off the hook, this Test could have had a rivetting finish. (Gameplan) |
Chetan Sharma writes Another win in a Test match at home for India though this one will be one of the most cherished ones. It is not every day that you beat West Indies in a series, even if it comes on home pitches so I must congratulate Saurav Ganguly and his team for it. Till this morning there was an element of doubt whether India will be able to clinch the series in Chennai itself. The West Indies had given themselves a fighting chance and with a set batsman like Ramnaresh Sarwan and others like Ryan Hinds and Ridley Jacobs to follow, they must have hoped for at least 120-130 more runs to be added to their total today. But the dice rolled in favour of the Indian team as wickets fell in a heap and the West Indies were all out for 229 in their second innings. For India, a target of 81 proved a cakewalk once Virender Sehwag gave the team another flying start and they achieved their mission losing just two wickets. This win has given India a 2-0 lead and as I have been saying from the start, 3-0 is very much on the cards. The good thing about this Indian bowling is that though the pitches favour their spinners, the medium pacers haven’t let down Ganguly’s faith in them. Javagal Srinath had picked up two important wickets yesterday while Zaheer Khan took three of the six West Indian wickets to fall today. He was getting some reverse swing with the old ball and if he can keep up with the art, I tell you Zaheer is a fine prospect for the future. Since he is a left-hander it works to his advantage and India can now look ahead with more confidence in his abilities. Again, it was Harbhajan Singh who played the decisive role in the Test match. Without his bold batting in Indian batting yesterday, they would not have got such a big lead. In bowling too, the ‘Turbanator’ took three wickets in the first innings and four in the second to be named the Man of the Match. He is enjoying bowling with Anil Kumble and I have little hesitation in saying that Harbhajan and Kumble are the world’s best pair of spinners. Harbhajan bowled a magical spell today when he picked up three wickets in one over. He was on a hat-trick too but Mervyn Dillon denied that to him. However, Dillon’s end came in the same over though it was another poor decision by umpire Asoka de Silva. I am afraid his umpiring was very ordinary in this Test. India have played good cricket this year and this win will keep their spirits high. They should not get complacent because once they make winning as their habit, other teams will start fearing them. |
