New drug to combat sepsis
Tripti Nath

Eli Lily and Company (India) Pvt. Ltd. has announced the launch of XIGRIS, a drug that can combat sepsis (better known as blood poisoning). The drug was launched in India on Friday, a day after its launch in Europe.

According to Eli Lily and Company, sepsis is a leading cause of death worldwide and kills more than 1400 persons everyday. In Europe, it is associated with deaths on a scale similar to that of lung cancer, breast cancer or colon cancer. Despite these staggering statistics, many people are either unfamiliar with sepsis or nurture common myths about it.

XIGRIS is a genetically engineered version of the human activated protein C molecule which is a result of 20 years of research by Eli Lily. The phase III clinical trials for the drug, also known as PROWESS study, has shown that XIGRIS reduces the risk of death from overwhelming septic infections by almost 20 per cent. The approval of the drug by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was based on the results of the aforesaid clinical trial. The drug would cost over Rs 5 lakh which includes 57 per cent duty. The company hopes to get an exemption on duty.

Rajiv Gulati, Chairman and MD, Eli Lily & Company, says: ``For decades, physicians have awaited the development of a product to treat patients at high risk of death from severe sepsis. XIGRIS is not a wonder drug with 100 per cent success rate but it provides hope where there was none.’’

According to Mr Gulati, two patients in India are being treated by XIGRIS.

Critical care physicians recognise severe sepsis as a major killer of patients in the intensive care units of their hospitals. Dr H.L. Kaul, Professor and Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology at AIIMS, explains that while many patients who develop severe sepsis are in the hospital for an unrelated illness, healthy people can also develop infections and quickly progress to severe sepsis.

Severe sepsis occurs when an infection (bacterial, viral, fugal or parasites) resulting from trauma, surgery, burns or cancer triggers off a cascade of immune system responses which can lead to acute organ dysfunction and often death.

High asthma rate in Delhi’s schoolkids

The incidence of asthma is almost two times higher among public school children of Delhi than their counterparts in suburban towns of Haryana (8.1 per cent versus 4.6 per cent), according to a recent study by two doctors of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The findings of the study were made public before the 14th National Pulmonary meet (October 11 to 13) at Ganga Ram Hospital and Hotel Maurya Sheraton. The conference was organised by Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), Delhi, and the Respiratory Chapter of IAP, Delhi. The theme of the conference was `Environment and Child Health.’ The research was led by Dr K. Chugh and Dr Anupam Sachdeva, Consulting Paediatricians at Ganga Ram Hospital.

The researchers identified parental smoking and commuting distance from home to school as factors which increase the chances of asthmatic attacks in children. They are of the view that childhood asthma can be treated effectively with modern aerosolised form of therapy, including nebulisers and inhalers. There are various factors which discourage people from trying this therapy. One of the impediments is the cost of treatment. Paediatricians have recommended favourable intervention by the government and the pharmaceutical industry towards reducing the cost of inhalers and nebulisers. The wrong notion held by parents that the inhalers are habit forming or are the last resort also come in the way of their use. Contrary to this belief, the side effects are minimal as the amount of medicine goes directly into the airways. Lack of knowledge among doctors about the benefits of this form of treatment and their apprehensions also reinforce the belief of the parents.

Teaching kids with disabilities

The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), a statutory body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, has announced the launch of a foundation course for in-service teachers through distance mode. Scheduled to be launched on November 7, the course been developed in collaboration with the Madhya Pradesh Bhoj University and will be offered to teachers in general education stream to serve children with disabilities effectively. The fee for the programme is Rs 1500.

The council hopes that the mode of paying the fee for the nominated teachers would be worked out through convergence with other Central or State schemes. RCI is confident that the programme will enable teachers imbibe knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills to impart education to children with various disabilities. Padam Bhushan Major H.P.S. Ahluwalia, Chairman, RCI, is determined to provide education to every child with a disability in the country. ``Our past experience shows that specialised training not only brings such children to normal schools but also retains them there. We have realised that the only way to bridge the gap between the special schools with disabilities and the large disabled population is by offering specialised courses on disability to every in-service teacher in the country through the distance mode,’’ says Major Ahluwalia.

Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, October 19
Vijay Singh of Fiji, fifth in the all-time money earners' list on the USPGA Tour, will be the star attraction in the Bilt Skins Golf Bonanza to be held at the DLF Golf and Country Club course on November 10.

With prize money of around Rs 22 lakh, the "Bilt Skins Golf with Vijay Singh" is one of the richest golf events to be played on Indian soil, and the highest prize money offered in a single round of golf in India with the possibility of an Indian player pocketing as much as Rs 10-15 lakh on a single day's game.

Vijay Singh, a US Masters and USPGA Championship winner, with total career earnings of nearly US $16 million, will travel to India after the season-ending US $5 million Tour Championship on November 3, the US Tour's grand finale for the elite in the game. Augusta Masters winner Vijay Singh will play against Jyoti Randhawa, Harmeet Kahlon and Kapil Dev for the US $45,000 prize money at stake.

The event, originally scheduled to be held on April 19-20 this year, was postponed due to a foot injury sustained by Vijay Singh during his challenge at the US Masters in Augusta.

The injury kept Vijay Singh off course for three weeks, but he has regained form and in the past two weeks on the USPGA Tour recorded third place and a sixth place finish to establish his reputation as one of the most consistent and formidable players in the world.

Vijay Singh will also play an 18-hole Invitational Pro-Arm event on November 9, and conduct a junior clinic just before the Bilt Skins game tees off. The Skins will give an opportunity to Jyoti Randhawa to have a "re-match" with Vijay, who finished one stroke ahead two weeks ago at the Dunhill Championship at St. Andrews, Scotland. Jyoti earned his biggest pay packet of his career, when he collected 170,000 Euros (approximately Rs 80 lakh). At No 9, Vijay would be the highest-ranked player ever to play on Indian soil since the official world rankings began some 15 years ago.
