Opposition parties have reacted sharply against the Punjab Government’s decision to end the free power facility to the farm sector and to charge “abiana” from farmers for the supply of canal water to them. Farmers threaten stir on SYL issue

PPCC to be reconstituted

The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) will be reconstituted this month, PPCC President H.S. Hanspal said here today. He said district and block party units would be set up later in phased manner. Mr Hanspal said he would soon meet AICC President Sonia Gandhi to finalise the list. He said only able and honest Congressmen would be included in the new state-level executive.

Pherurai gets 4-day police remand

Gurcharan Singh Pherurai, former SSP of Ferozepore has been remanded to four days’ police custody, till October 19. He was today produced in the court of the JMIC, Mr H.S. Grewal amid tight security and slogan-shouting by SAD workers.

Sukhwant Singh’s remand extended
Kharar, October 16
Mr Roshan Lal Chouhan, Judicial Magistrate, Kharar, today extended the police remand of Sukhwant Singh, Director, Land Mortgage Bank, Maloud, who was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau in connection with an earlier case registered against Hardeep Singh, OSD to former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, till October 18 and ordered that the accused should be produced at 2 pm on that day.

Namdharis laud CM’s drive against graft

The Namdhari Samaj today lauded the crusade launched by the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, against corruption in the state. It also thanked the Congress president, Ms Sonia Gandhi, for appointing Mr H.S. Hanspal, a Namdhari, as president of the Pradesh Congress Committee after his name was recommended by the Chief Minister for this post.

Row over filling ETO posts

Efforts of the state government to promote ministerial staff of the Excise and Taxation Department to the rank of Excise and Taxation Officer (ETO) allegedly against the norms have been opposed by the Taxation Inspectors Association which expressed its resentment against the move to the Financial Commissioner (Taxation) and Excise and Taxation Commissioner (ETC), Punjab, on October 8.

Langah case: next hearing on Oct 24

Mr A.S. Kathuria, Special Judge, Ropar, today fixed October 24 as the next date of hearing for arguments on charges against Sucha Singh Langah, former Punjab PWD Minister and senior Akali leader, and others in a case registered against them under Sections 420, 467, 468,471 and 120-B of the IPC and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act by the Vigilance Bureau at SAS Nagar.

Smuggler’s remand extended

Mr Jarjinder Pal Singh, Judicial Magistrate, today extended the police remand of Raj Modar, who was arrested by the district police for smuggling of 75 kg of opium. The next hearing of the case would be held on October 18.

Bhaniarawala cases transferred

A local court today transferred all six cases pending against controversial religious leader Baba Piara Singh Bhaniarawala, including an FIR number 161 in which one of his co-accused has given an application to turn approver against him, to Ambala.

Cashier ‘looted’ bank for lavish lifestyle

An alleged bank dacoity in Ghore Nab village under Lehra police station in which two persons were accused of decamping with Rs 4.5 lakh after threatening the bank’s cashier at gun point, has now turned out to be an insider’s job with the local police claiming today that the dacoity had been planned by the cashier and a security guard to finance their lavish lifestyles.

Personal enmity was said to be the reason behind the shoot-out last evening in which an Assistant Sub-Inspector, Randhir Singh, attached to Mr Balwant Singh Dhillon, member of SGPC, was killed.

4 killed in road mishap
Hoshiarpur, October 16
Four persons, including a woman, died on the spot while three others were seriously injured when a van (PBO-7K-6564) in which they were travelling collided with a truck (PB10W-9265) coming from the opposite direction. The accident took place near Thuana village at about 1 p.m. today.

2 crushed to death

In a clash outside a liquor vend at Jagjitpur village, 10 km from here late last night, two persons were killed when a person allegedly crushed them below his tractor.
