Training programme in PAU

A training programme on post-harvest value addition got underway in the Department of Food Science and Technology on the PAU campus here today.

According to Dr A.K. Bakshi, head of the department, it has been felt since long that to move out of the wheat-rice cycle, the farmers must not be able to market his produce at competitive prices, but also be able to convert his produce into products with a longer shelf life. This will ensure that the farmer gets more profits through post-harvest value addition.

On the occasion, the staff demonstrated products and processes which have been developed. The present programme will train krishi vigyan kendra scientists who, in turn, will impart training to the farmers to prepare products like pasta, fresh instant noodles to generate additional income. The participants were shown how to produce extruded snacks.

The participants were also informed that as part of pilot project, a small mill has been purchased to convert IQ-IT of what into maida, suji and atta. The mill could be used at the rural level for conversion of wheat into atta and other value added products in the farm sector.

Baba Gurmukh Singh Hall inaugurated

Baba Gurmukh Singh Hall was inaugurated at the Ramgarhia College for girls today. Bhai Harjinder Singh from Srinagar and Baldeep Singh from Delhi were present on the occasion to perform kirtan.

The chief guest was Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, SHSAD chief. He highlighted Baba Gurmukh Singh’s contribution in social work and field of education.

Mr Hira Singh Gabaria also paid tributes to Baba Gurmukh Singh.

He said Baba was the man with vision that laid the foundation of education of the Ramgarhia Society.

Mr Sukhdev Libra, MP, showed his concern over the declining standards of education.

He appealed to the women to save education from further decline.

Both, Mr Libra and Mr Tohra, donated Rs 2.50 lakh each to the college. Giani Bhagat Singh, president of the Ramgarhia Education Council, had earlier welcomed the chief guest. Principal Harmeet Kaur proposed a vote of thanks.

PAU college convocation

The 12th convocation of the College of Veterinary Science, PAU, is scheduled to be held on October 19 in Pal Auditorium, PAU.

Dr V.K. Taneja, Deputy Director-General (Animal Sciences), Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, while Dr K.S. Aulakh, VC, PAU, will preside over the function.

During the convocation, 158 students, who have completed their B.V.Sc. and A.H. programme during the period February, 2000 to August, 2002, will be awarded the degrees. In addition, three gold medals and academic roll of honour, 12 merit certificates, 10 certificates of academic achievements and 115 certificates for the achievements in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities will be awarded.
