Foundation stone of sports stadium laid

Mullanpur-Garibdas (Kharar), October 16
A long-pending demand of residents of Mullanpur-Garibdas village for a sports stadium was fulfilled today.

Lala Lajpat Rai, BJP MP, laid the foundation stone of the stadium in the village.

The MP has sanctioned Rs 10 lakh from his Member Parliament Local Area Development Fund for in development of the village. A sum of Rs 5 lakh would be used in the construction of the sports stadium, which will come up adjacent to the new school building.

The remaining Rs 5 lakh will be utilised for laying a half kilometer link road in the village and foundation stone for the same was also laid by the MP today. He later visited several parts of the village. He was born in the village and later settled in Ludhiana.

On the occasion, meritorious students who had excelled in sports, academics and culture were given prizes and prominent persons were awarded momentos. Among others who were present on the occasion included Mr D.D Puri, president of the Puri Development Trust for Mullanpur, Mr Dewan Singh, sarpanch, and other members of the panchyat.

It is worth mentioning here that the Punjab Government had earlier sanctioned about Rs 15 lakh for the construction of a sports stadium and improving village streets and the drainage system, but the grant lapsed as it could not be used within the stipulated period.

Zorawar Singh, who led the field in Category B after the second round in the Chandigarh Junior/Subjunior Golf Championship on Wednesday.

Chandigarh, October 16
Jaskirat S. Dullet of the Chandigarh Golf Club with a total score 155 was still leading followed by Dinesh Singh and Madhav Verma in Category ‘A’ on the second day of the Chandigarh Junior/Subjunior Golf Championship at the Chandigarh Golf Club today.

Category ‘B’ was led by Zorawar Singh, also of Chandigarh Golf Club, with a score of 157. Gaganjeet Singh Bhullar and Ajeetesh S. Sandhu were second and third.

Fatehbir Singh Dhaliwal, again of Chandigarh Golf Club, was the leader of Category ‘C’ followed by Amanjot Singh and Sidharath Seth.

Today Category ‘D’ (Under 10 years) also joined the field. It was heartening to see these young enthusiasts chasing the ball over 18 holes. Virat Badhwar of Category ‘D’ had a creditable score of 90. Rommel Majumdar and Khalin H Joshi followed close with a score of 92.

Tomorrow a cut has been applied for Category ‘A’, B and ‘C’ at 50 per cent of the total field. However no cut has been applied on category ‘D’ to encourage the budding golfers of tomorrow.

Open tendering process for number plates

Chandigarh, October 16
The Chandigarh Administration will go in for the open-tendering process to select a company to manufacture and sell high-security number plates which are mandatory for new vehicles from next year.

This has been done after the Government of India rejected a proposal of the Chandigarh Administration whereby it was stated that all five companies which had been earlier selected by the Government of India be allowed to set up shop in the city.

The administration is in the process of defining the terms of the tenders.
