70-year-old athlete hopes for bright future
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 4
Spread the message of love not hate
Don't be proud of what you gain

These are the views of Mr Jitender Marwaha, a 70-year-old athlete, who has won over 15 medals in the 11th Asian Veteran Sportsmanship, All India Veteran Athletic Championship and other events during the past five years. When the young Indian athletes are struggling to save their face in the Asian Games, Mr Marwaha is lamenting that despite being selected, he could not participate in the International Veterans Athletic Meet held in China last month due to financial constraints.

After 24 years of service with the Campa Cola as an accountant, he got his retirement. He says he was looking for some work to earn his living as he did not get any pension. But he had never thought about sports. Though he has to work even today to earn money, he has developed a taste for sports, thanks to his friends.

He says, ‘‘I was encouraged by some of my friends to participate in athletic activities, and thus I started running in February, 1997. After that I never looked back and continued to practice everyday. My family also supported me, and I was able to win one silver and one bronze medal in 1997 at the 19th National Veteran Athletic Championship held at Kanpur.’’

He has also been a regular participant in the annual shramdan at the Sukhna Lake since its inception in 1988. Despite being handicapped due to impaired hearing, he could always be seen smiling and attentive to the minute details. His hobbies include to write couplets as well.

Regarding his achievements, he says proudly: ‘‘Running is my passion, and I run for fun. No doubt the taste of medals is so good that it keeps me running despite severe cold or rains. I have also won one silver medal in 20th National Veteran Athletic Championship in 1998, held at Mumbai, one gold and one bronze in the next national championship, besides one gold and two silver medals in 1999 at North Zone Veteran Sportsmanship, Chandigarh.’’

He claims that his joy knew no bounds when he won one gold and two bronze medals at the 22nd All-India Veteran Athletic Championship held at Bangalore in 2000. However, he says,‘‘ I could not participate in the International Veterans Athletic Meet held in China last month. Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal, MP, had also recommended my case to the administration to provide financial assistance to travel to China. But nothing did happen.’’ Despite that setback, he says,‘‘ I am going to be cowed down and would continue to strive for better performance.’’
