20 lakh infants administered pulse polio
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 29
An estimated 20 lakh infants were on Sunday administered pulse polio drops. Although the first phase of Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme has concluded, personnel drawn from the Department of Health will travel door to door over the next five days to administer the drops to any children who may have been left out.

The Delhi Health Minister, Mr A.K. Walia, on Sunday said about seven thousand centres had been set up across the city. The vaccine was also administered to children at railway stations, inter-state bus terminuses (ISBTs), entertainment centres, entry points on national highways and the airport. Over 22 thousand personnel were detailed for the vaccination.

The Minister said 7,200 teams comprising two personnel each would go door to door over the next five days so that a large number of children are inoculated. “1,200 supervisors have been deployed to monitor the door to door campaign,” the Minister said.

Asked how the teams would identify children who have not been administered the drops, the Minister informed that all those children who received Pulse polio drops on Sunday had been “marked with a blue medicine on the little finger of left hand.”

The Minister reiterated that the Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme (PPIP) and the Routine Polio Immunisation Programme (RPIP) supplement each other. “It is necessary to understand that apart from PPIP, every child must get vaccinated for polio at one and a half month, two and a half month, three and a half month and at the age of one and a half year. The next phase of PPIP will be on November 17.
