THE American Soybean Association (ASA), a non-profit organisation, dedicated to global promotion and expansion for the market for soya, recently organised an event at Hotel Inter Continental in the Capital to create awareness about the health benefits of soya. The Association has been working closely with various co-operative associations as soyabean processors, distributors and soya food manufacturers.

A CD-Rom presentation highlighted the use and importance of soya consumption. The presentation incorporated the views of Dr S.C. Manchanda, Professor and Head of the Cardiology department at AIIMS, Delhi, Professor Tara Gopaldas, Director Tara Consultancy, Bangalore and other medical experts. Soya dishes as almond milk, soya moong dal halwa, shabmani pulao, tofu green and chicken with soya nuggets were also served during the event.

Dr Suresh Itapu, Technical Director, ASA, said that soya must be added in the Indian vegetarian diet. “Since the Indian population is predominantly vegetarian, it becomes all the more important for them to take a diet rich in protein. Soya contains 35 to 40 per cent protein compared to 20 to 30 per cent available in other legumes and can easily met the protein requirement of a vegetarian diet. Research has proved that Soya can control and prevent diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart attack and osteoporosis.

Mr Virgil Miedema, Regional Director, ASA, said that despite the obvious benefits of Soya, there is lack of awareness or understanding among South Asian countries about the availability of different soya products in the market or its benefits. “A health claim issued by the US food and Drug Administration certifies that consumption of 25 grms of soya protein per day with a diet low in saturated fatty acids may reduce the risk of heart diseases by reducing cholestrol.”
