Conference on female foeticide

Ludhiana, September 21
The Department of Health Education and Family Welfare, Christian Medical College and Hospital and International Union for Health Promotion and Education, SEARB, Punjab Chapter, will organise a health education conference on “Reproductive rights, PNDT Act and female foeticide in rural Punjab” on September 23 and 24 on the hospital premises.

Dr Rajeev Kapoor, Deputy Medical Superintendent, in a press statement today said Mr Ramesh Chander Dogra, Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Medical Education, Punjab, will inaugurate the conference. Mr Rajan Kashyap, Principal Secretary to the Government of Punjab, Department of Health and Family Welfare, will introduce the theme of the conference. Dr Poornima Advani, Chairperson, National Commission for Women, New Delhi, will deliver the keynote address. Mr Santokh Singh Choudhry, Minister, Social Security, Women and Child Development and Social Welfare will preside over the function. Dr Silas. J. Charles, Director, CMCH, will present the awards.

The conference will register comprehensive deliberations and critical analysis of significant issues pertaining to female foeticide, reproductive rights and the PNDT Act in rural Punjab, violence against women, existing welfare schemes for the development of girl child, status of girl child in rural Punjab, employment of women in rural development programmes, social pressure on pregnant women for sex determination and role of concerned government and non-government agencies.

Other guests will include Dr S. K. Chaturvedi, state representative, UNICEF, New Delhi, Mr V. B. Handa, Mr Anurag Aggarwal, Mr Nahar Singh Gill, Dr S. P. S. Sandhu, Ms Surinder Kaur Grewal, Mr Som Prakash, Mr C. S. Talwar and Mr Vijay Kumar.

Volleyball meet

Ludhiana, September 21
The Ludhiana District Volleyball Championship for boys and girls as well as men and women will be held here at the S D Government College for Boys ground on September 25 and 26, according to a press note. Entries may be sent to Mr Surinder Singh, volleyball coach at District Sports Office, Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana, the note said.
