FCI regain soccer title

New Delhi, September 6
Five times former champions Food Corporation of India (FCI), North Zone regained the title when they dethroned defending champions Delhi Audit 5-3 via tie-breaker in the Senior Division Delhi Soccer Association Institutional League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium in the Capital on Friday.

Urban Development Ministry defeated Punjab National Bank (PNB) by a solitary goal to clinch the A Division title. In an evenly-contested match, favourites PNB held an edge over Urban Development Ministry, but it was the latter who scored a goal, which proved decisive. Veteran Ram Singh despatched a powerful shot very far from the goal to stun rival custodian Chint Bahadur, in the 47th minute.

In the title clash between FCI and Delhi Audit, the food people scored first through inside-left Pushpender in the sixth minute while Audit drew parity through Neeraj Chaudhary in the 55th minute. The deadlock was resolved in the tie-breaker shoot out in which FCI got goals through Devesh Kaushik, Mehtab Ahmed, Gurmeet and J S Rawat while Rishi Kapoor and Deepak Bisht converted their spot kicks for Audit. However, Naresh Mann and Birender Bhakuni failed to convert their “kicks”.

FCI managing director S K Mukherjee gave away the prizes.

Nivia beat CRPF: Nivia Football Academy beat Central Reserve Police Force School 1-0 in the Nivia Schools Football Tournament. Mohd.

Rashid scored the match-winner for Nivia. Nivia will take on Tata Football Academy in the Under-16 final on September 8 (Sunday) at 4.30 pm.

ColorPlus Bowling Championship begins

New Delhi, September 6
Over 70 bowling professionals from Delhi are taking part in the ColorPlus National Bowling Championship, which began at the Hot Shot bowling alley in South Delhi on Friday.

S.A Hameed, who won the Commonwealth Championship in Scotland last month and Anuradha Sarda, last year’s runner-up in the women’s category, are competing in the Rs 6 lakh prize championship. Besides, 300 bowling enthusiasts have registered to play in Delhi in the open and corporate categories.

Indian cricketers Murali Karthik, Nikhil Chopra and Vijay Dahiya set the ball rolling to signal the start of the championship. Delhi has traditionally been the stronger contingent at the Bowling Championship.

This is reflected from the fact that of the 48 finalists, 14 are from Delhi for the challenge round to be held in Bangalore from September 24 to 29. Leading pros like Hameed, Delhi champion Mohan Lal, Samir Jain and Anuradha Sarda have confirmed their participation.

15,000 children for Rajiv Gandhi Marathon

New Delhi, September 6
Over 15,000 school children from the slum and JJ clusters of Delhi will participate in the ninth NSCI-Rajiv Gandhi Marathon Run, to be held on

September 8 (Sunday). The races will be flagged off from the Ferozeshah Kotla ground and will culminate at the National Sports Club of India (NSCI) lawns at Mathura Road.

NSCI president Subhash Chopra said in the Capital on Friday that the races for senior girls and junior girls will be flagged off from the Ferozeshah Kotla ground at 9.30 am while the races for junior boys and senior boys will be flagged off at 11.30 a m. He said the races will be held in the 6 to 10 years and 10 to 14 years age groups both in the girls and boys sections. Mr Subhash Chopra said the Marathon Run will carry a total cash prize of Rs 80,000. He said 400 best runners will be given cash awards. The first five runners in each age group will be given cash prizes of Rs 1,000 each and the next best ten will be given Rs 500 each. The next best ten will be given Rs 250 each while the next 75 runners will be given Rs 100 each. Mr Chopra also announced that the first 25 children in each age group will be given cash scholarships of Rs 100 per month till they complete their higher secondary education. OSR
