Training workshop for physically challenged
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, September 4
In order to explore new avenues for the physically challenged in the industrial sector a three-day workshop is being organised at the central tool room (CTR) here. A number of representatives from the industry and from among the physically challenged are attending the work shop which started here today.

According to Mr S K Vadhera, general manager, CTR, with the advancement of technology, the scope for work in the industry for the physically challenged had increased. He pointed out that with the computerisation of most of the machines and tools, not much physical labour was required. There were a number of machines, which could be easily operated by the physically challenged.

The CTR, which is an Indo-German joint project aimed at providing trained and skilled manpower to the industry has so far no provision for the reservation for the physically challenged. Mr Vadhera said there were practical problems as the physically challenged could not work on heavy machines. He said since now there is better scope, the CRT decided to organise workshop.

It was among others attended by the coordinator, National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped, Kolkata, Mr Ajit Salani, of the National Handicapped Welfare Council, Dr Mohan Verghese, Principal, Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, Mr K R Joshi, manager training CTR, Ludhiana and several others.

However, most of the physically handicapped who attended the workshop, rued the fact that the government was indifferent towards them. Taking the lead, Mr Salani pointed out various inherent contradictions and problems in classifying the physically challenged . He said while it was said that there were about 15 per cent physically-chalenged persons in India, in Punjab the state government was claiming that there were less than 2 per cent physically-challenged people.

He sought a fresh census of the physically challenged people in India and also their categorisation according to the extent of disability like below 14 per cent, between 40 to 60 per cent and 60 per cent and above. He sought special measures for social and economic rehabilitation for the physically challenged. He observed that the government should provide incentives to the private sector for employing physically challenged. He disclosed that some private sector companies in Punjab had provided employment to the physically challenged and demanded that others should also follow the suit. He emphasised the need for creating mass awareness for the welfare of these people.
