C.P. Bansal is Director Health Services

The UT Administration today appointed Dr C.P. Bansal as the Director Health Services.

Dr Bansal is presently the seniormost Additional Director, Punjab Health Services. He will take charge from Dr Rameshwar Chander, who will be retiring by the end of the month.

Dr Bansal said his first priority would be to provide the best possible medical facilities to people of the city. “I will not only work wholeheartedly to take forward the various health programmes launched by the department but will try and make improvement in them, he said.

In reply to a question about the timing of his appointment, when several people have been taken ill due to cholera and other water-borne disease, he said during his 30-year tenure, he had confronted much more difficult situations.” During my posting at Mansa, we had to suddenly treat 200 patients, who were injured in a bomb explosion during Ram Leela ,” he says.

An MS Orthopaedics himself, his is a family of doctors as his wife and two daughters are in the same profession.

Mohali patient tests positive for cholera

Out of the 11 gastroenteritis cases admitted to the General Hospital and Government Medical College and Hospital today, one patient from Mohali, has tested positive for cholera.

Giving this information, Director, Health Services, Dr Rameshwar Chander, said that all the three persons admitted to GMCH, with gastroenteritis were from Mohali.

He said that apart from this eight persons with gastro had been admitted to the General Hospital. Only one old cholera case at the PGI, was still under treatment at the Advanced Paediatrics Centre.

He stated that a mobile team of five doctors had been stationed at Sector 52 to provide treatment to the residents having fever and gastroenteritis. He added that the malaria wing carried out active surveillance of all fever cases and made 175 slides, apart from distributing chloroquine and paracetamol tablets.

Detailing the steps being taken by the department, Dr Chander, said that desert coolers were being checked so as to prevent breeding of mosquitoes. “Garbage points are being treated with lime and malathion mixture to check fly menace and water samples are being taken for analysis” he elaborated. He added that pamphlets were being distributed to the residents to educate them about the habit of taking safe drinking water and properly cooked food.

The Municipal Commissioner, Mr M.P. Singh, disclosed that workers had been engaged for cleaning and collecting garbage from the colonies. “JCBs have been pressed into service to scrap old dumps of garbage , so as to improve sanitation in the colonies,” he stated.

He further said that to assess the quality of drinking water supplied in these areas , the MC officials, along with Public Health Wing, had collected samples, which had being sent for bacteriological examination to the Microbiology department, PGI.

Our team deserved it: Bhangu

Gurdial Singh Bhangu is one man whose name now has become synonymous with women hockey in India. Bhangu, chief national coach of the women hockey team was here in the city to receive commendation certificate in appreciation of his services for the gold medal winning Indian women hockey team in the just concluded Commonwealth Games in Manchester. The award was given by the Chief Minister of Punjab, Capt Amarinder Singh.

In an interview today, Bhangu pinned high hopes from women hockey team. He said the victory has given a new lease of life to the women hockey.

Bhangu elaborated on various other points to keep girls in high spirits. He said in a game, a coach has to see both technical as well as mental aspects of a particular sportswoman. Since this is a field game so one cannot afford to lose coordination even for a fraction of second in a match.

He said very few had expected gold medal for India and in the final also, people were expecting England’s win. But our girls did the opposite. However, in the forthcoming Asian Games, China, Korea were the main contenders and the competition would be tougher than what India faced in the Commonwealth Games

On the tactics adopted by the team, he said, girls were given adequate training in physical conditioning and penalty corner conversion. He praised the Mamta Kharab for showing her killing instinct to optimum level when she capitalised every chance India got. Bhangu said at present the team was a perfect blend of seniors like Sita Gussian, Pritam Thakran and juniors Mamta, Saba Anjum among others.

Bhangu was all praise for the Indian team doctor Dr Ashok Ahuja and said it was Dr Ahuja ‘s presence at Manchester which helped team remain injury free. He said the role played by former Olympian Rupa Saini, now manager of the women team, was equally important and she always acted like a true friend to the girls.

On the preparation for the Asian Games, Bhangu said the national camp is undergoing at the NIS, Patiala, and before leaving for Busan, we might practice for few days at Delhi. “But I am trying to arrange few matches in Korea at university level and other club teams, so that girls get more exposure prior to matches and also get acclamatised to the environment,” he added.

DAV boys, Sarvhitkari girls win titles

DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, in the boys’ section and Sharda Sarvhitkari School, Sector 40, in the girls’ section were the winners in the final of the third Pandit Mohan Lal Memorial Basketball Tournament played here today in SD Public School, Sector 32. Mr Yog Raj Sachdeva, Regional Officer, CBSE, Chandigarh, gave away the prizes.

In the boys’ final, DAV school boys played a good game to down the hosts SD School, 46-40, with half-time score of 24-20 in favour of the DAV cagers. The scorers were, Rajinder Pal 18, Balraj 14, Manoj 5; losers: Amrit Pal 26, Ravinder 7 and Gurbir 3.

In the girls’ final, Sharda School defeated IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, 48-43. Half time score was 24-22. The main scorers were, Gurjeet 12, Jaswinder 12, Rajiv11; losers: Shweta 24, Aman 11, Prabhjot 5.

Earlier in the boys’ semifinals, PML SD School defeated New Public School, Sector 18, 56-53, with half-time score of 29-23. In the second semifinal, DAV School defeated Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, 69-62, with half-time score of 35-27.

Junior football

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, outplayed Government Model High school, Sector 40, 3-0, in the Chandigarh Junior Football Championship for the Hansraj DAV Trophy played here on Tuesday at Football Stadium, Sector 17.

Three matches were scheduled for the day. Heavy rain disrupted the second match and then the secretary of the Chandigarh Football Association, Mr Rakesh Bakshi called off the rest of the play.

Fitness coaching camp

The Chandigarh Basketball Association has selected 25 boys and 20 girls for a preliminary 10-day fitness coaching camp beginning August 29 at Sports Complex, Sector 46, and at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, respectively, for boys and girls. The selected probables have been directed to report to Ms Paramjit Kaur (girls) and Mr Amarjeet Singh (boys).

The probables are: boys — Nikhil Chopra, Vinod Senior, Praveen, Mukesh, Vinod Junior, Dilawar Singh, Amit Kumar, Shaminder Singh, Dalip Kumar, Shiv, Akshay Jeet, Navdeep Singh, Virender, Harinder Singh, Suraj, Devinder Singh, Gurbir Singh, Ravinder Singh, Sandeep, Vikramjeet, Hardeep, Arjun, Gulsher Singh, Vishal and Rohit Vaid.

Girls — Prabhjot Kaur, Sumeet, Versha, Sumeet Randhawa, Rekha, Harshita, Henna, Aakarsh, Pallavi, Prabhkiran, Tania, Aditi, Shivani, Richa, Ganimat Brar, Divya, Kannu Priya, Manjot, Abhilasha and Simranjeet Kaur.

St Kabir’s Trophy

The league cricket match for the St Kabir’s trophy for the under-12 section between the Stadium XI and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, was washed away, due to rain on Tuesday. The match was scheduled at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16. At that time, the Stadium XI had scored 27 runs without loss of any wicket and only nine overs had been bowled. Both teams were awarded two points each as the tie was abandoned.

Khadi board staff want salaries released

Employees of the Punjab Khadi and Village Industries Board today held a rally in front of the board’s office to protest against the non-payment of salaries for the past eight months. Earlier, they had given an ultimatum to the government to release the salaries by August 26.

The employees raised slogans against the government for not releasing their salaries. As per a release of the New Punjab Khadi and Village Industries Board Employees Union, a delegation of the union met Finance Minister, Mr Lal Singh, and the Special Secretary, Department of Industries and Commerce, Mr T.R. Sarangal.

The delegation was assured that the salaries would be paid soon. Subsequently, the union extended its ultimatum up to September 2 and till then the affected employees would wear black badges and continue to hold rallies.

The leaders who addressed the rally included Mr Raghbir Singh Dhaliwal, president, Mr Paramjit Singh, general secretary, Mr K.K. Sharda, press secretary, and Mr S.K. Duggal, secretary.

Rs 3.15 crore for 25 villages

The Union Government has sanctioned a sum of Rs 3.15 crore for the development of 25 villages of Majri block in Kharar subdivision under the Budki Rao Watershed Programme. Out of this amount the first instalment of Rs 43.15 lakh has already been received. This was announced by Ms Seema Jain, Deputy Commissioner, Ropar, while speaking at a seminar of sarpanches and panches of these villages at Majri yesterday.
