Patient succumbs to wrangling
Our Correspondent

Rohtak, August 16
Internal bickering among doctors of the Pt.B.D.Sharma Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), the only government owned medical college hospital in Haryana, threatens to adversely affect medical services at the hospital.

Tara Chand, a resident of district Jind, was brought to the Emergency Department of PGIMS here on August 6 with penetrating injury in the neck.

The injury had damaged the main blood vessels in the neck, which led to the collection of large amount of blood in the neck and upper part of the chest, which made it difficult for him to breath.

The doctor on duty admitted the patient to the ENT Department, thinking it to be a throat injury. However, the ENT Department found that the problem was hardly related to ENT but to the collection of blood in the chest and neck due to the damaged blood vessels.

As such, the patient was left in the Casualty Department with advice to consult the cardiovascular or a general surgeon for this problem.

The cardiovascular surgeon was consulted but he reportedly declined to accept the patient and advised the general surgeon to take up the patient.

However, the general surgeon said that it was a case of vascular injury and as such, it should be treated by the vascular surgeon, who was a specialist for such a case. However, the vascular surgeon, reportedly, refused to accept the patient.

Even Dr R.S.Dahiya, in charge of the Emergency Department, could not sort out the stalemate.

Ultimately, Dr Subedar Singh, from the Department of Surgery was contacted who shifted the patient to the respiratory Intensive Care Unit (ICU) because the patient had developed a major respiratory problem due to increasing blood pressure in the chest and neck.

Unfortunately, after three days, the procedural wrangling and bickering among doctors led to the death of the patient.

The postmortem examination, which was done by a panel of doctors, showed that the veins and arteries in the neck of the patient had been severely damaged leading to the collection of blood in his chest and neck.

According to experts, it was clearly a case of vascular injuries and should have been treated by the Cardiovascular Department. The patients have blamed the loose administrative control and the stubborn attitude of the doctors for the tragedy.
