Basketball meet from August 19

The Chandigarh Youth Basketball Championship for boys and girls will be held from August 19 to 22 at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41. According to Mr D.S. Bedi, president of the association, the four-day meet will be held for the below-16 age group. The championship will also serve as the basis for the selection of the Chandigarh team for the 19th National Youth Basketball Championship. He said majority of players belonging to school units affiliated to the association would take part in the meet. Meanwhile, a fax message received from Col A.S. Judge, recently removed from the presidentship of the CBA, has stated that another UT Youth basketball Championship will be held from August 29 to September 1. Cricket meet:
The UT Cricket Association will hold a cricket tournament for below-12 players for the St Kabir Trophy from August 22 in the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16. Those interested may submit the confirmation of their participation, along with age proof duly attested by the head of their respective institutions, by August 19. Those desirous may contact Mr Harish Sharma, cricket coach, or Mr Naib Singh, manager, Cricket stadium, Sector 16, between 4 pm to 7 pm on any working day.Karate trials:
The Sports Karate Federation of India will hold open trials to select Indian boys’ and girls’ karate teams for the Third World Cup Children and Junior championship to be held in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, from October 2 to 6, according to Mr Ashwani Kumar, general secretary of the federation. These trials, he said, would be conducted by the Sports Karate-Do-Association of Delhi under the aegis of the Sports Karate Federation of India. The age and weight categories for boys and girls will be as under: children — 9-10 year; 11-12 year; 13-14 year; juniors — 15-17 year. Boys — 62 kg, 73 kg, plus 73 kg; girls — 52 kg, below-56 kg, above-56 kg; and open weight categories — 83 kg; 17 to 20 year (girls): 55 kg, below-60 kg, above-60 kg. Individual kata, team kata and team kumite 3+1.Rural sports meet:
A rural sports meet will be organised in the Guru Dronacharya Stadium, Dadu Majra, on August 29 and 30 by the Guru Gobind Singh Sports club and the Democratic Youth Federation of India. The event, held annually, attracts a large number of rural youths. Athletics and wrestling will be the main events.
