Morocco Cup begins at Tangiers
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 12
The Morocco Cup Cricket Tournament, featuring South Africa, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, got off the mark at the Tangiers Cricket Stadium in Morocco.

The teams will compete in a 50 overs a side one-day triangular series, for the trophy and prize money.

Organised by the Federation Royale Marocine de Cricket, the Morocco Cup 2002 will be telecast live exclusively on Ten Sports.

The Tangiers Cricket Stadium is the first neutral venue to have been granted Test as well as ODI status at the same time. This is because the stadium at Tangiers offers modern cricketing facilities that are at par with or even above international standards—a must for any top side to consider visiting the venue. The square, outfield and playing areas all conform to the tough and exacting ICC standards.

ICC-appointed match referee Mike Procter of South Africa inspected the venue in June, 2002. Thus, the ICC sanctioned stadium can now host events featuring full-member countries. The stadium offers modern facilities, which include five turf wickets for matches, five turf and two cement wickets in the practice areas, amenities for the players, umpires and referees, television room and facilities for both media and spectators.

Initially restricted to foreign diplomatic communities, most players, especially the locals, were not tuned to the nuances of the game. But today, Morocco is an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council, which has officially approved the venue and supports the development of cricket in Morocco as part of its long-term strategy to globalise the game.

The last three years have seen the birth of the Moroccan Cricket Association under the aegis and efforts of Abdulrahman Bukhatir, and others who share his vision. Now, the game is regularly played in Rabat, Tangiers and Casablanca. The FRMC has acquired the services of three professional Indian coaches—Mohinder Amarnath, assisted by Surinder Amarnath and Narayan Rao Satham. The trio has been assigned the responsibility of developing cricket in Morocco at all levels, training senior local cricketers as well as coaches to promote the game further in Morocco, in addition to coaching the national team.

Nestling on the north-westernmost tip of Africa, Morocco is part of the North African countries known as the Maghreb. The country, separated from the rest of Africa by the towering Atlas Mountains, is a tantalising land steeped in mystique and culture. Strategically fringed by the Mediterranean on the north and the Atlantic on the west, Morocco remained independent while developing a rich culture blended from Arab, Berver, European and African influences. Climatic conditions, more Mediterranean than African, support a variety of flora and fauna. Snowy peaks, lush valleys, sunny beaches, scorching dunes and old cities—Morocco has it all.

The port city of Tangiers, popularly called the “Gateway to Spain”, faces the southernmost point of Spain just across the Straight of Gibraltar. Azure waters of the Mediterranean, white sunny beaches and rugged highlands contribute to the landscape of the city. Its winding streets, bustling markets and rows of olive trees that dot the city imparts an aura of quaintness that blends unabashedly with the contemporary to make it a haven for both tourist and trader.

Along with the live and exclusive telecast of the Morocco Cup direct from Tangiers, Ten Sports currently also has an exciting mix of sports programming. These include Formula One races, WWE, classic India-Pakistan cricket, Sharjah Cup, Sharjah Champions Trophy as well as all international cricket from Sri Lanka, the FA Cup soccer, Manchester United football, the Women’s Professional Tennis, ATP Dubai Tennis Open, the Ryder Cup golf, Champions Trophy hockey and the Champions Challenge Cup Hockey.
