CMC to set up cancer institute

Ludhiana, August 12
The management of Christian Medical College and Hospital has decided to set up a cancer institute on its campus here to provide specialised cancer treatment.

Stating this, Dr T.M. Jaison, Acting Director of the CMC Hospital said three renowned oncologists and old students of the CMC, now based in the USA, would join the institute. The three are Dr Sewa Singh Legah. Dr Madan Arora of Michigan University and Dr Medha John. Dr Charles, the present Director of the CMCH, is also a cancer specialist.

Mr S.N. Maini, chairman advisory committee, CMCH, is coordinating the work of the cancer institute and the proposed CMC - Ajit Singh Lotey Hospital on the Gill road.

The cancer institute will have 50 beds and will cost Rs 25 crore. The entire money will come through donations. Mr Maini said the CMC — Ajit Singh Lotey Hospital will be spread in 20 acres. The land has been donated by Mr Ghanshyam Singh Lotey, a local industrialist.

The work on both projects is likely to start next month.

Ajit, Mandeep win laurels

Ajit Singh and Mandeep Kaur were declared the ‘best sportsman’ and the ‘best sportswoman’, respectively, in the zonal level sports meet organised by the Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, Ludhiana, at the Prithipal Singh Stadium, Punjab Agricultural University, here yesterday.

In the cricket final (senior group), Rest of Ludhiana XI prevailed over Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar XI by 20 runs to lift the trophy. Batting first, Rest of Ludhiana made 107 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their allotted quota of 10 overs. In reply, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar XI could muster only 87 runs after losing 8 wickets. Guneet Singh who hit 43 runs for the winners was named the ‘man of the match’.

In the junior section, the combined team of New Model Town and Sargodha Colony XI, in a thrilling final beat the Rest of Ludhiana team by four runs. Chasing a target of 78 runs set by New Model Town and Sargodha Colony XI, Rest of Ludhiana’ essay folded at 74 runs.

In the ‘couples cricket’ final, Prabhjot Singh and Chandeep Kaur defeated the team of Kuldeep Singh and Surinder Kaur by four runs.

Other results were: Badminton: Senior boys — 1 Ravind Singh, 2 Ajit Singh; Senior girls — 1 Mandeep Kaur, 2 Amrinder Kaur; Boys U-15 — 1 Ishmeet Singh, 2 Amarjot Singh; Girls U-15 — 1 Prabhneet Kaur, 2 Avneet Kaur; Couples — 1 Ajit Singh and Sharanjit Kaur, 2 Arwinder Singh and Satinder Kaur.

Table Tennis: Senior boys — 1 Kulwinder Singh, 2 Guneet Singh; Senior girls — 1 Mandeep Kaur, 2 — Amarinder Kaur; Boys U-15 — 1 Inder Jit Singh, 2 Prince; Girls U-15 —1 Gurpreet Kaur, 2 Kiranjot Kaur; Couples — 1 Jawinder Singh and Amarinder Kaur, 2 Guneet Singh and Puneet Kaur.

Bhai Nand Lal running trophy was shared by Sargodha Colony and New Model Town teams while the runners-up Challenge Cup was bagged by Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar team.
