UP gives 500 MW to Punjab
Tribune News Service

Ropar, August 11
Responding to Punjab’s request, the Uttar Pradesh Government today gave its share of 500-MW (70 lakh units) power from the Central pool to Punjab, providing a relief, especially to the agriculture sector, whose supply was subsequently increased in the state today.

The PSEB supplied 966 lakh units (LUs) in the state yesterday, out of which 416 LUs came from thermal plants of the state, 293 LUs from hydro-electric projects, and 261 LUs from the Central pool. The demand of power in the state is more than 1200 LUs daily.

With the rise of the water level in the Ranjit Sagar Dam reservoir, the project supplied 51 LUs yesterday with the running of two generating units. Himachal Pradesh supplied 20 LUs and Uttaranchal supplied 16 LUs to Punjab yesterday. Besides this, the overdrawal of power by the PSEB from the Central pool yesterday, resulted in booking of costly power from the Narora atomic power plant.

Meanwhile, unit number one of the Ropar Thermal Plant, which was shut down due to a boiler leakage on August 7, is still under repairs despite the assurances of the RTP authorities that the unit would start generation soon. It is costing 50 LUs per day.

Mr V. K. Mohindroo, General Manager of the Ropar Thermal Plant, this afternoon claimed that the unit would start generation on Monday. He disclosed that the other five units were running on full capacity, generating 250 LUs of power.

Grid collapse averted

New Delhi, August 11
Close on the heels of the July 30 western grid collapse, yet another power failure was averted today due to timely action by the Western Regional Load Dispatch Centre.

“A grid collapse was averted by timely action by the WRLDC when Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board (CSEB) was overdrawing at a low frequency,” Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd said in a statement here.

The statement said on August 9 and 10, due to overwithdrawal by the CSEB even after repeated persuasions, the frequency level came down forcing the PGCIL to take emergency measures. This reduced CSEB drawal by 75 MW and frequency improved. PTIBack
