Gall stone incidents high in Punjab

The public education cell of Dewan Hospital and Nima Organisation here organised a talk on “Management of kidney and gall bladder stones.” Dr Narotam Dewan, Chief Surgeon of Dewan Hospital, delivered the lecture. Dr Dewan has been on the teaching faculty of Dayanand and Christian Medical Colleges.

Dr Dewan narrated his experiences with the aid of slides and photographs. He said Punjab falls in the stone belt area. The incident of gall stones is high here because we consume good amount of milk. In the South, where people consume less amount of milk and lot of tamarind (imlee), gall bladder diseases are rare. Dr Dewan explained the clinical presentation, required investigations, complications and latest trends in the treatment of gallstone diseases to the gathered medical practitioners.

He stressed the need for proper scientific approach and timely intervention to avoid complications. He condemned the prevailing superstitions and witchcraft. He showed the photograph of a woman who had fallen prey to such practices. Burning coal was placed on her stomach, leading to permanent scars.

Dr Dewan had started laparoscopic cholecystectomy in D.M.C. Hospital Ludhiana. He said kidney stones can be prevented by simple habit of drinking 12 to 15 glasses of water everyday. Dr Dewan explained the working of latest lithotripsy machine installed in the hospital. The machine breaks stones without any need of surgery or anaesthesia. Even admission is not required. Hard stones are removed by Nephroscope introduced through a small button hole-incision. This procedure called PCNL is being successfully carried out at the hospital. Mr Prem Mittle, Senior Deputy Mayor, Ludhiana, inaugurated the lecture. He praised the Hospital for providing latest medical facilities and helping the needy patients. Ninety two doctors from Ludhiana and adjoining areas attended the lecture.

Red Cross chief urges NGOs to collect blood

Ms Sunil Agarwal, chairperson, Indian Red Cross Society, Ludhiana unit, exhorted the voluntary and social organisation engaged in providing health and medical facilities, to organise maximum number of blood donation camps, so that every needy patient could be provided blood required to save his life.

She was addressing a meeting after inaugurating a blood donation camp organised by the society at the viklang kendra of the Bharat Vikas Parishad in Rishi Nagar today.

The Red Cross Society was doing exemplary work for the welfare of the weaker sections of the society and poor patients. During this year, so far, 13 camps had been organised in the district and 2, 019 units of blood were collected which had been provided to the needy patients. During the last year, the society had organised 33 blood donation camps in the district and collected 3,459 units of blood for the needy persons, she informed.

Ms Agarwal appealed to the people to come forward to donate the blood for the needy patients, as it was the most noble gesture that could save human lives. She said that the district administration should also create awareness among the people regarding the importance of the donation of blood.

Mr S.P. Malik, secretary of the society, said that misconceptions in the minds of the people regarding the physical weakness after donating the blood should also be cleared, as the human body recovered to the normal within a few hours and produced fresh blood. He said that the society would organised more camps in the coming four months, so that maximum number of blood units could be collected to fulfill the requirement of the needy patients.

Among others who were present on this occasion include Dr Lajpat Rai, Dr V.R. Marhia, Dr D.R.C. Vikatia, Dr J.S. Virkang and Dr (Mrs) N. Manna.

Cops transferred

The SSP Khanna, Mr Paramjit Singh Sarao, has sent ASI Rachpal Singh, incharge, Payal police station, to the police lines, Khanna, whereas Mr Gurmit Singh SI, police lines, has been transferred to the Payal police station. Mr Dalbag Singh, SHO, Machhiwara, has been sent to the police lines, whereas SI Prem Singh of the police lines, Khanna, has been shifted to Machhiwara. Also ASI Sarwan Singh of the police lines, Khanna, has been sent to the Isru police Chowki. it has been learnt that the transfers have been made on administrative grounds.
