With a total strength of 6,500 students in its two branches, Kundan Vidya Mandir is the oldest and the biggest school of Ludhiana. It was set up some 62 years ago by the wellknown industrialist and philanthropist, late Rai Sahib Kundan Lal, who himself was not very well educated. He dismantled his factory over a seven acre plot of land to set up the school which has now become a landmark of Ludhiana's educational scene. The old chimney of his factory can still be seen on the school campus.

The school has been quick to recognise and appreciate the business culture that prevails in Ludhiana. The commerce courses offered by KVM have become a major attraction. While other schools in the city lay a great emphasis on science subjects, KVM has created a niche for itself in the commerce stream. A total of 120 students are studying in two sections.

Kundan Vidya Mandir was the first school in Punjab to get affiliation with the CBSE in 1963. It imparts liberal education and promotes healthy expression among the students. It is committed to the ideals of nationalism, secularism, democracy and social awareness. Its staff and students are recruited from all walks of life irrespective of caste, creed and religion. The school is known for its discipline, smart turn out and spirit of belongingness. Kundan Vidya Mandir has two branches. The City Branch is located right across the City Railway Station and caters for the city population. The Main Branch is situated in the posh Civil Lines area of Ludhiana and is spread over an area of 7 acres. Both the institutions are run by a Trust and a Managing Committee comprising eminent public men, educationists and industrialists.

The founder of the school was a man of progressive views who wanted his students to acquire scientific and technical education in order to contribute their bit to the national cause of industrialization. He wanted his school to be a novel institution where students while enjoying the benefits of public school education would inculcate and absorb within them the much needed qualities of nationalism, service and sacrifice. The school still follows the lead given by him. Even today it turns out students by the thousands who have fanned out in all walks of life and are doing extremely well for themselves.

Sports is an inseparable segment of the school curriculum. Sports develop team spirit, Leadership acumen and spirit to fight and compete for a desired end, besides of course the growth of physical and mental health. With this aim in mind, the school attaches great importance to sports activities. Inter-House Sports Meet is held every year. All students take part in games regularly under the supervision of well qualified and experienced coaches. Training is imparted in physical exercises, gymnastics and yoga. A Skating Rink is under construction. K.V.M. students have represented their school right from the district level to the international level. They have brought laurels to the school by excelling in various games like baseball, cricket, swimming, badminton and table tennis. At present the school has 23 National level players, 10 State level players and 24 District level players.

Nothing is possible without backing of staff and teachers’

Principal Neena KhannaA defence officers wife, Ms Neena Khanna joined KVM as its principal just three months ago. But her vast experience in running the schools in different parts of the country has come in handy for her to understand the problems and pleasures of running the biggest and oldest school of Ludhiana. Youthful and energetic, she is full of enthusiasm and spends most of her day in administering the school. She believes that nothing is possible without the support and participation of the staff and teachers of the school.

She has remained Principal of Army Public School, Jammu, for nearly a decade and a half. The school has been voted as the best school of the Northern Command.

She is meticulous in her approach to education and lays great stress on proper education for allround development of the children. KVM has created special sections for 10+ and + 2 students. These are called remedial classes for children scoring less than 50% marks; For achievers who score between 75% and 90% marks while the third section is for super achievers who have scored more than 90% marks.

All About K.V.M.

Kundan Vidya Mandir, one of the most reputed schools in Ludhiana, was established in 1943. From that time uptill now, many changes have taken place in our school. This includes the extension and enlargement of our school campus from the middle section to the senior section, establishment of an activity room for small children but the most enormous and the most important establishment was that of our school auditorium which is one of the top five auditoriums in the North Zone.

Our school has excelled in all fields from the time it came into being. Every year a number of activities like the poem recitation contest, declamation, debates, quiz contests, talent search contest etc. take place in our school. Our school gets good results in the board classes and has set high standards in the city. Besides all this, vocational courses are also being taught to the students. There are biology, chemistry and physics laboratories for the senior section students. My school provides each and every facility to its students to make their future bright and is, therefore, the best school in district.

Poems by students

My School

Kundan Vidya Mandir

The great temple of learning

Is adored by all

The teacher and the taught

It's here we tumble,

It's here we fumble

It's here we are chiselled,

It's here we are shaped,

To face the world

and sparkle

In the ocean of humanity

In the world far and wide

One who marches ahead

One who stands out

Is the Kundanite.

Waves

Forever wanderers of the sea;

Wander the boundless oceans, unbound and free,

In a gown of blue, they're clad

Are they wandering and wandering like a nomad

Or adventurous are they, like a young lad.

Some taller than towering mountains,

With steep and falling crest

Some smaller than the ripples,

Moving they are, as if at rest

But angry, stormy nights

Break their peace

Thrum them to magnificent

Black armoured knights

And any barrier in front of them that day,

They strike it in the most tremendous way.

Else rolling, they are always in glee

Happy wanderers they are : of the sea.

Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, August 11
Monsoon might have disappointed the Ludhianvis but a “Monsoon Blast,” a starry night, followed by dance bash was organised at the Lodhi Club last night. The weather turned pleasant and the audience enjoyed the robust singing of Preet Harpal. His latest album “Munde Sardara De” was the highlight of the show. On popular demand, he regaled the audience with songs from the album. “Patlo”, “Munde Sardara De” were instant hit with the people.

The dance troupe “Dazzle” performed with great agility. The troupe members whirled and twirled in their dazzling clothes. Yudhvir Manak, another upcoming talented singer, sang with elan his popular number “katil koka”, “teekhi takni” from his latest album. His previous album “Billo mera dil le gai” had topped the popularity charts sometime ago. Son of famous folk singer Kuldip Manak, he sang effortlessly and with great passion and feelings.

Dazzle performed with great verve that electrified the audience. Madan Madi, a seasoned singer, an artiste who was one time described as the best folk singer of Canada, sang “kadi ta has bol ve, na jind sadi rol ve”, the title song from his latest album of the same name. His next song was “man na kariya”.
