No fresh cholera case reported
Tribune News Service

SAS Nagar August 7
Even as a six-year-old was admitted to the Civil Hospital here with acute diarrhoea, the number of patients undergoing treatment at the hospital for cholera remained two by the end of the day today.

The six-year-old, Sadhna, from Madanpura village was admitted late in the evening but according to doctors who have had a look at her, she is apparently not suffering from cholera but local diarrhoea. The doctors are yet to receive the reports of the initial tests done on her.

The doctors also stated that as far as the outbreak of cholera was concerned, there had been no more patients from Udham Singh Colony or any other place with any symptoms of cholera-like infection but teams of doctors were visiting the colony. The condition of the two admitted is also said to be improving.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Council has arranged for water tankers in Udham Singh Colony and residents are now using the tanker water for drinking purposes. The residents who had been using water from handpumps have been asked not to drink the water and three of the 13 hand pumps in the colony which were close to the Patiala ki Rao choe have been blocked.

Residents said a medical team had also visited them and given ORS solution to the residents who were slightly ill. The council also arranged for cleaning of the colony and sprayed disinfectant in the area.

Satish Kumar, a resident, however, complained that he had been vomiting and had fever but the Civil hospital had refused to admit him, instead they had asked him to buy medicines. The hospital doctors on the other hand said he was most likely suffering from some other disease.

A visit to the two much larger colonies in SAS Nagar, however, proved that the authorities had done little to prevent the outbreak of the disease here. Water from handpumps was being used for drinking purposes with no arrangements having been made to stop the use of this water.

Chandigarh, August 7
It was an emotional homecoming for the cricketing Star, Kapil Dev, when he landed up at the Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy to meet the future ‘stars’ of these traditional games.

Kapil Dev, who is in Chandigarh these days, made it a point to visit the Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy, a unique residential academy of its own kind in India where children selected from the rural areas of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Chandigarh are being groomed under the careful eyes of professional coaches.

Yesterday when Kapil Dev met the Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Lt. Gen. JFR Jacob, he agreed to get involved in the promotion of sports in his native city, Chandigarh, and with special focus on sports like hockey and football.

The trainees of the Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy were too thrilled to say anything when they saw their ‘hero’ amongst them. Deputy Commissioner and Director Sports Chandigarh, Mr M. Ramshekhar, explained the facilities being provided to the trainees of the Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy. Kapil Dev commented: “In our time there were no such academies or facilities available to us. These students are lucky that there are getting professional coaching as well as educational and residential facilities under one roof”.

Speaking to the trainees, Kapil Dev advised them to make the most of it. He said that it is discipline, dedication and focused approach to the game that would drive them to international levels.

Emotionally choked Kapil Dev recalled that it was the strict discipline of his coach, which had improved his standard of game and brought him to this position.

Kapil Dev promised to the players that he would keep on coming to this academy frequently. Kapil Dev agreed to the suggestions of General Jacob to be associated with Sector 16 Cricket Stadium where he started his cricket career. He said that he was ready to give all technical help in re-laying the ground and pitches.

Earlier, Kapil Dev went around the dormitories where the players are being put up. He also visited the mess, kitchen and common room of the players and appreciated the facilities being offered to them. Kapil Dev also went through the diet chart and offered some suggestions to the dietician.

F and CC meeting postponed
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 7
The Mayor, Ms Lalit Joshi, today postponed for August 13 the Finance and Contract Committee meeting scheduled for tomorrow.

The absence of expenditure details of Rs 50 lakh committed for pre-monsoon session on improvement of roads in Sector 17 before considering to invite suggestions for a paid parking system in Sectors 34, 35 and 22 did not leave any option but to postpone the meeting, the Congress Leader in the House, Mr Subhash Chawla, told Chandigarh Tribune here today.

He said with the Commissioner, Mr M.P. Singh, being away on a training programme in Hyderabad, the committee would not be able to seek details on how much of the parking contract money committed for the improvement of roads of Sector 17 had been spent.

The Congress Councillor group leader said the party would not be able to move further on the proposed imposition of paid parking in other Sectors till the promises to the people of Sectors 17, 8 and 9 were honoured.

He said the Commissioner had gone on record that the money collected from the imposition of paid parking would be spent on improving the condition of Sectors 17, 8 and 9. The Commissioner has been on training since August 5 but the sudden postponement could also be because of unavailability of members for tomorrow’s meeting.

The road committee had also set aside this money for the development of these areas, the road committee Chairman, Mr Pardeep Chhabra, said.

Tomorrow’s meeting had an agenda item on inviting suggestions for the system of paid parking in Sectors 34, 35 and 22.

The meeting also seems to have been put off due to agenda items not providing details on a private company’s offer of maintaining road berms and green belts for a period of five years free of charge.

Another important agenda to be taken up was recruiting 405 daily wage sweepers, which might incur a burden of Rs 1 crore per annum at least.

HUDA postpones sites’ auction
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, August 7
The auction of various school sites, nursing home sites, clinic and clinical laboratory sites by the Haryana Urban Development Authority drew a very poor response. The authorities were thus forced to postpone the auction after a bid for a nursery school was accepted.

Nine school sites, seven clinic sites, six nursing home sites and one clinical laboratory site were put up for auction here today. However, a mere eight bidders came to participate in the auction.

The auction began with bids being invited for school sites. Only one nursery school site in Sector 26 was auctioned. However, as against a reserve price of Rs 29.10 lakh, it fetched a mere Rs. 28.54 lakh. Seeing the poor response to school sites , the HUDA officials decided to begin the auctioning of nursing home sites.

A site in Sector 12, measuring about 250 sq yard, was offered to the bidders. HUDA had fixed the reserve price at Rs 13.81 lakh, but the highest bid was received at only Rs 4,000 more than the reserve price.

Perturbed at the poor response for this auction, the authorities, including the Administrator, Mr Arun Kumar Gupta and Estate Officer, Ms Geeta Bharti, decided to post-pone the auction for the rest of the sites. The bids being offered for most of these sites were much less than the prevailing market price .

Earlier sites for educational institutions were allotted to the institutions, as is the present policy in neighbouring Chandigarh. “Almost a decade ago, 11 institutions were allotted sites by HUDA, but following a litigation in this regard, decided by Apex Court, the policy of allotment has been changed, “ informed a senior official.

Bank square parking contract cancelled
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 7
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh today cancelled the contract of the Bank Square parking contractor in Sector 17 Vishnu Gupta for his failure to honour an advance cheque for July.

Order to this effect was issued by the Additional Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, Mr Ashok Vashishth, today.

The corporation also forfeited the 25 per cent advance deposit of the contractor.

The parking contractor’s firm had last month served a legal notice to the Corporation to honour terms and conditions threatening to walk off the contract.

The firm had demanded the return of advance deposit.

The firm had been warned last month by the Municipal Corporation to honour monthly advance cheques after the firm’s failure to honour the cheque of June also.

The firm later deposited the amount but served the legal notice.

Mr Vashishth had earlier issued a notice to the firm asking as to why its contract should not be cancelled and asked the contract to appear before him on Monday.

The firm did not appear before the Additional Commissioner on Monday inviting ex-parte decision.

The firm on Monday landed into a controversy with one of woman visitors accusing his staff of snatching a purse, which the contractor denied.

The matter had gone to police also.
