Call for strict law to tackle menace of spurious drugs

Seeking cooperation from the drug manufacturing industry and its trading agencies in curbing the menace of spurious drugs, the Drug Controller of India, Mr Ashwani Kumar, stressed that in view of the gravity of the problem, it needs to be tackled with a heavy hand.

Addressing a seminar, “Menace of spurious drugs”, organised by the Haryana Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association in Bahadurgarh, the Drug Controller said that the manufacturing of spurious drugs have been inflicting heavy losses on the genuine manufacturers, apart from posing a serious health hazard to the consumers.

Thanking the HPMA for organising the seminar, he held that the drug manufacturers, with a strong intelligence network, can play a major role in tackling the menace. He said that the assistance of the police is very crucial.

Mr Kumar informed that a committee appointed by the central government has submitted its recommendations for a review in the existing Drugs and Cosmetic Act. It has recommended the introduction of more stringent laws in order to tackle the menace of spurious drugs.

Earlier, Mr Abhay Chautala, MLA, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said that it was not possible for 550 drugs inspectors to inspect around 37 lakh manufacturing units. He recommended the introduction of a POTA like law to check the menace of spurious drugs. He said that medicine was as essential a commodity as power and water.

Mr M.S.Malik, DGP, Haryana, also extended the full cooperation of the Police Department in dealing with the menace of spurious drugs.

Gyan Bharti earn full points in football

Gyan Bharti School defeated hosts Mount St. Mary’s School by a solitary goal to earn full points in a Pool B match of the Bro Mahony Inter-School Football Tournament, organised by Mount St. Mary’s School, Delhi Cantt, at its ground.

After a goalless first half, Divakar scored the match-winner for Gyan Bharti School in the 15th minute of second half.

In a Pool A match, St. Columba’s School beat Delhi Public School (DPS), R K Puram 5-3 at the MSM School ground. St. Columba’s took the lead through Febin in the first half.

DPS equalised within four minutes when they converted a penalty kick. Febin struck again to put Columba’s in the lead, which was consolidated by Dyaral and Edwin, who scored a goal each. Prince struck a brace to ensure Columba’s victory. Vikram Singh and Aditya Shukla scored a goal each for DPS to reduce Columba’s victory margin.

In a senior division Pool A match, hosts Mount St. Mary’s School outclassed Modern School, Vasant Vihar 5-1. The winners led by 2-0. Pradeep Gurjar and Rohit Abrol scored one goal each while Tavish Kumar scored three goals, but no hattrick. Abhinav Grover scored the consolation goal for Modern School.

In the second match, Saini School, Rewari edged past Shri Ram School, Gurgaon 3-1 in their opening league match.

After leading by a goal at half time, scored by Mahesh, Sandeep struck twice for Saini School. Varun Sudan shot in the only goal of Shri Ram School.

Tuesday’s fixtures: Vasant Valley vs Don Bosco (9 am); Mont Fort vs Modern School, Barakhamba Road (10.40 am), Modern School, Barakhamba Road vs St. Columba’s (12 pm) and Laxman Public School vs Don Bosco (1.30 pm).

19 in fray for DDCA Sports Committee elections

Nineteen representatives of clubs remain in the fray after the withdrawal of five candidates for the election of ten members to the Sports Committee of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) to run the sports activities of the association. The elections will be held on July 25 at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground from 9 am to 3 pm. The Sports Committee will be elected for a one-year term— 2002-2003.

The 19 in the fray are: Ajit Chaudhary (Madras Club), Ajit Singh Madhok (Tilak Nagar Colts), Anil Kumar Chaudhary (Darling Club), Ashok Sharma (Ravi Brothers Club), Bharat Misra (Universal Club), Brij Mohan Gulati (Delhi Police Club), M. K. Sharma (Inborn Cricketers), Manbir Singh Bhatia (Pioneer Club), Naresh Sharma (Young Cricketers), P. K. Soni (IIC Cricket team), Pradeep K. Boxing Association formed at Narnaul

With the brainchild of Dr C. S. Rao, Superintendent of Police, Narnaul, a District Boxing Association was formed. And good numbers of players, especially from rural areas, are having regular practice. A coach has been hired to trained them.

An inter-district level boxing competition was concluded at police lines on Sunday. As many as 46 youths were participated. Dr C. S. Rao, SP, Narnaul, gave away the prizes.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rao said that free association, boarding and lodging arrangements were being made for the players.

Vinod Kumar of Hisar was adjudged Best Player (Boxer) where as Jitender Kumar of Narnaul was declared Best Loser in heavy weight category. In the 57-kg weight category Jai Singh (Narnaul) was declared as the Promising Boxer. In the 33-kg weight category Vikas Hisar stood first, Devender Kumar (Hisar) second, In the 36 kg category Sumit (Hisar) took the first prize, Vikas second (Hisar), In 54-kg, Deepak (Hisar) stood first Sandeep (Hisar) second, In the 57-kg category Jai Singh (Narnaul) 1st, Suraj (Narnaul) second, 60 kg category Vikram and Yesh Pal first and secondly respectively. In 63-kg category Rajesh (Hisar) stood first and Vimal (Narnaul) second. In 71-kg category, Surender (Hisar) first, Satpal second. In 91kg category Vinod of Hisar first, Jitender (Narnaul) second respectively.

India lift six medals at Pattaya

India bagged two silver and four bronze medals in the fourth Asian Youth (boys and girls) Under-16 Weightlifting Championship held at Pattaya, Thailand from July 17 to 21. N Thoniu Devi won two bronze medals in the 48kg category while Renu Bala lifted a bronze and two silver medals in the 52kg event. Subhangi Karande lifted a bronze in the 53 kg category.

The medal winners and coaches called on Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Pon. Radhakrishnan on Monday. Hailing the achievements of the Indian lifters, the minister assured their coaches all Governmental assistance in the training of the lifters.

A dashing knock of 65 runs by Ashwat Kumar and fiery bowling of 3 for 5 by medium-pacer Luv Shorey helped Young Friends beat North Delhi Cricket Academy by 125 runs in the first Prabhu Dayal Memorial Under-15 Cricket Tournament at the Ashok Vihar ground.

Scores: Young Friends: 196 for 6 in 30 overs (Ashwat Kumar 65, Ishan Bakshi 46, Akshay Kumar 3 for 21). North Delhi Cricket Academy: 71 all out in 15.5 overs (Vivek Goyal 23, Mudit Kumar 20, Luv Shorey 3 for 5, Prashant Gupta 2 for 12, Varun Kumar 2 for 19).

Arya Vrat tourney

Tarun Chaudhary hit 75 and Ashutosh Sharma claimed 4 for 14, which included a hattrick, and off-spinner Nitin Kumar took 3 for 15 to help Salwan Boys defeat Arya Vrat Sports Club by 55 runs in a league match of the Arya Vrat Under-19 Cricket Tournament at the Bharat Nagar ground.

Soumik, Love star in DAV School’s victory

A fine knock of 86 by Delhi under-14 player Soumik Chatterji and a rapidfire knock of 63 by Love Sehrawat, aided by the brilliant bowling spells of Pawan Chauhan (4 for 48) and Abhishek Sakuja (3 for 23) helped DAV School, Shalimar Bagh, beat St. Marks School, Meera Bagh by 76 runs in a league match of the first Prabhu Dayal Memorial Under-15 Cricket Tournament at the Ashok Vihar Picknick Hut ground.

Soumik was adjudged the Man of the Match while Love was given the best batsman award. Pawan Chauhan got the best bowler award.

Telegraph golf from July 23

The cream of Indian golf will participate in the second edition of the Telegraph Merchants Cup Golf Tournament, to be held at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club from July 23 to 26.

The tournament will provide an opportunity to leading corporate houses to participate in this prestigious. An individual competition, titled “The Telegraph Challenge Cup”, will be played with an aim to provide golfers with a stage of showcase their individual golfing abilities as well.

Sports meet

New Delhi, July 22
A four-day inter-state sports meet of the Delhi Police will start from today in the North- West district in Ashok Vihar from July 23 to 26.

The tournament comprising games like Basket Ball and Volley Ball, will take place in the Major Dyan Chand Sports Complex at Ashok Vihar.

The timings of the tournament are 8 am to 12 am and 4pm to 6 pm. OSR

Centre sanctions more money for police modernisation in Haryana

Gurgaon, July 22
The central government has enhanced the money for the modernisation of the Haryana Police from Rs 2.38 crore to Rs 22.10 crore. This was revealed by the Haryana Director General of Police, Mr M S Malik, after inaugurating a Women Police Cell at Sector 15, Part 11, Gurgaon, today.

The DGP said that a review committee of the Government of India had appreciated the performance of the Haryana Police and its proper utilisation of funds for its modernisation programme.

For the modernisation programme, the Haryana Police had spent a sum of Rs 55 crore during the year 2000-2001 and Rs 48 crore in last financial year.

He added that as many as 700 old vehicles had been replaced and around 2000 houses were under constructions for the police personnel at different places in the state.

Mr Malik informed that the state government had planned to set up one women police station in each range in

Haryana, besides one women police cell at all range head quarters.

The DGP said that the government had already sanctioned additional posts of 3 inspectors, 12 sub-inspectors, 19 assistant sub-inspectors, 36 head constables and 200 constables to manage these women police stations and women police cells.

He said that Haryana Police has also planned to provide a special room and toilets for the lady staff. Special emphasis is being laid to deal with the crime against women, he said.

During the period 1 July 2001 to June 30, 2002, the DGP claimed that the state police worked out 1,289 cases out of the 1,677 cases pertaining to dowry. In this regard, 2,115 accused were arrested. A total number of 243 cases of dowry deaths were worked out from the 266 cases registered and 1,715 accused were arrested. The state police solved 268 abduction cases out of 336 registered, arresting 310 persons.

The police registered a total number of 386 cases of rape, out of which 310 were worked out with the arrest of 379 persons, informed the officer.

Regarding eve teasing cases, he said that the police had solved 857 cases out of 1,007 cases registered in different police stations and arrested 1,165 persons in the state during the period.

The state police had been provided with ultra modern equipment like speed radar, breath-analysers, night cross belt, dragon lights, polycarbonate shields and sticks and video cameras, informed the officer. Mr Malik said that 25 police stations for the Gurgaon range were being constructed at Udyog Vihar, DLF City and Pataudi at Gurgaon, Hodel, Hassanpur, Nggal Chaudhary, Sector 7 and Saran at Faridabad, Kanina, Dharuhera, Bawal, Kosli, Khol and Model Town at Rewari and Rampura, Rohrai, Kasaula and City Narnaul at Mahendragarh. Mr Malik further said that the police had released a ‘Citizen’s Charter’ providing rights and duties of the citizen towards the police. He appealed to the public to cooperate with the police so that they could help in safe guarding their lives and properties.
