Computer awareness week begins

Exhibitions, quizzes, presentations and declamation contests are scheduled to be held in the computer awareness week that began at Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, here today.

Students from all classes put up their best efforts to showcase their knowledge of computers and multimedia products with models and charts. The students were also asked to present write-ups on computers.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Mr Akshay Sharma, CEO, Emmtel Internet Services. The panel of judges included Dr Pratibha Goel from the Department of Business Management,

An inter-house declamation contest for Classes IX and X would be held tomorrow on ‘‘Impact of computers on communication’’ and ‘‘Computer viruses and how to keep them away’’. On July 24, students from Classes VI to VIII would speak on ‘‘Role of computers in daily life’’ and ‘‘Role of computers in education’’.

Besides this, multimedia presentations and websites prepared by students from Classes X to XII would also be evaluated. On July 25, a quiz contest for students from Classes III to V would be held.

Quiz contest for students from Classes VI to VIII would be held on July 26. The computer awareness week would conclude on July 27 with a quiz contest for Classes XI and XII.

The Principal of the school, Sister Helima, said the activities were a part of the ongoing quest for excellence where students could be ambassadors of computer awareness.

Mr Sanjay Shroff, in charge of the computer section, said the programme would enhance knowledge of the students as well as their parents.

Toppers honoured by SBI

Machhiwara, July 22
Students of Shakti Public Senior Secondary School who bagged the first, second and the fifth positions in the state in the plus two examination held this year were honoured by the State Bank of India (Agriculture Branch) Machhiwara. The students were presented wrist watches on this occasion.. The assistant zonal manager of the bank, Ms Ashutosh Sharma, promised to donate a water cooler to the school.

Those honoured on the occasion were Jarnail Singh, Ranjit Kaur and Jagpinder Singh who got the first, second and the fifth position, respectively, in the state in the plus two examination.

Apart from these, three students of class X Lipsy Rani, Ramandeep Kaur and Geeta Rani of the same school were praised for getting the first three positions in Samrala tehsil.

In a function organised on the premises of the school Mr Ashutosh Sharma said the SBI had launched a scheme under which an outstanding student could be sanctioned a loan of Rs 4 lakh for higher education at a nominal rate of interest.

A cultural programme was also presented by schoolchildren on this occasion. Others who were present on the occasion include Mr B.R. Patti, manager of the Local branch of the SBI, Mr Surinder Kundra, president, PTA, Mr Rajinder Kapoor, chairman of the managing committee of the school, Mr Gurnam Singh Dalla, Mr Jaipal Singh and Mr Ritesh Sharma. Mr Bhupinder Kapoor, manager of the school thanked the guests and parents.

Santokh arrives with ‘Sanwaria’

Until ‘‘Sanwaria’’, his first album, this young music director from Sri Ganganagar was better known as composer duo Sajid-Wajid's assistant. Now with the release of his first independent album as a music director, Santokh Singh is much in demand.

His is no unusual story. This Sri Ganganagar boy arrived in Mumbai with dreams in his eyes to make it big. And before long, he managed to do just that. As if by divine intervention, he came in contact with Sajid-Wajid . He assisted the composer duo for more than 10 films, till he was spotted by the Universal music company.

‘‘Sanwaria’’ has eight songs, penned by Sahib Allhabadi, Rakesh Maanjhi and Arif Dehalvi and sung by Jaspinder Narula and upcoming singer Bobby Singh.

The album has songs for all moods and Santokh Singh has used pop, bhangra and Indian western music to come up with a blend of fusion music.

According to Santokh Singh , he had to come up do something exceptional because there are so many music directors on the scene.

At present, he is working hard for his next two albums. ‘‘I have done my best, rest is up to the God,’’ he says. DP
