SAI doing little to promote talent Chandigarh, July 17 Though a number of schemes were initiated by this centre over the past many years, like Sports Training Centre, day boarding schemes, but only a few could materialise. The biggest surprise came when the National Talent Scheme was discontinued. It was the only available scheme for below-14 section. SAI officials said the scheme would not be popularised any more and instead the day boarding schemes would be encouraged. The DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, authorities have tried to convince the SAI authorities for making the day boarding scheme functional in the school, but for the past two years there is not much progress in this direction. Every year trials are held here and things do not progress much beyond that. According to sources SAI is wasting money. At one point of time, the school authorities have even decided to dispense with the scheme, since it has not served the purpose for which it was started. Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, had been the proud host to various schemes including the NSTC. But the day its name was deleted from the list of favoured schools for various scheme, it devised another novel way of promoting sport by starting its own academies. These academies, are progressing in the right direction. Talent needs to be encouraged at school level, but SAI has not initiated any steps which allow children to derive some real benefit. SAI has posted coaches at various centres, but the ultimate beneficiary is a particular institution. No efforts are being made to tap talent in various sport disciplines in below-14 category. As per experts, the right age to start any sport is six plus. But in SAI, various schemes calls for taking the trained stuff. The All-India Tennis Association has recently formulated a tennis promotion scheme for three to six years age group. But SAI seems to be going the other way. It should devise ways and means to spot talent, organise tournaments for young players and promote various schemes by publicising these in a professional manner. |

Three companies bid for
wet dredging project Chandigarh, July 17 Having learnt a lesson from the previous tendering process for the project, this time the Administration had laid down specific norms for the companies bidding in the process. These included a minimum turnover, ownership of the machinery and minimum number of works carried out in the recent past. An advertisement will be inserted in various newspapers inviting bids for consultancy. The terms and conditions for payment for the consultants are yet to be decided. It will all depend upon how much do various agencies want to offer consultancy. In the past, the wet dredging project has been jinxed. First time when the bids were invited, seven companies had submitted tenders for carrying out dredging in the lake. The project costing Rs 4.5 crore is aimed at saving the lake from shrinking due to silt coming down the hills through the two seasonal rivulets feeding the lake. The requisite sanctions from various bodies has been received and the money will also be given by the Government of India. Dredging will increase the depth of the lake by four feet and will be good for the next 16 years, say calculations made by the Engineering Department. It will take about 18 months to complete. When wet dredging starts, silt will be dumped in the form of a slurry into
decantation tanks, being built in an area north of the lake. In the de-cantation tanks, silt will settle down and water will flow back into Sukhna. The dredger will take out 20 per cent of silt with 80 per cent of water. The silt will settle down in the de-cantation tanks while the water will trickle back into the lake. Actually officials of the Administration were quite skeptical about the project as no one knows about the calculations of silt on per cubic foot basis. Now, sources said various clauses have been incorporated into the contract. |
