No parallel centres of power, says Advani New Delhi, June 30 Sources here indicated that the undercurrents of such a move were being felt for more than a month now, and allayed fears that the installation of a Deputy Prime Minister was fraught with the danger of establishing two parallel power centres in New Delhi. In an interface with reporters today, Mr Advani dismissed apprehensions in certain quarters that his elevation as Deputy Prime Minister would lead to the creation of another power centre. The domain of Mr Advani’s work profile was unlikely to undergo any major metamorphosis in the immediate aftermath of his appointment as Mr Vajpayee’s shadow. Mr Advani himself emphasised that the move would only inject more efficiency in governance. “I have been doing similar kind of work before but now the responsibility and accountability is a lot more. In the eyes of the public and my Cabinet colleagues, however, my responsibilities have increased”, Mr Advani said. He said his new assignment only formalised the role and responsibilities he was already handling. Even though Mr Advani said Mr Vajpayee would lead the party in the next elections, the sources indicated that the objective of ensuring a smooth transition of leadership in case of any exigency had been the main consideration for the Prime Minister. Political analysts said the timing of the decision was significant in the sense that the anticipated dropping of some “non-performing” ministers could send the signal that Mr Vajpayee was seeking to execute a mid-course political correction while at the same time positioning Mr Advani as heir apparent in the leadership stakes. Besides, except for Vallabh Bhai Patel, who was Jawaharlal Nehru’s deputy, all other Deputy Prime Ministers were more of facilitating instruments necessitated by the compulsions of coalition politics, rather than that of creating an actual number two to smoothen the functioning of the government. Meanwhile, senior politicians and Union Ministers today thronged Mr Advani’s residence to congratulate him on his elevation. |
BJP leaders sore over exit of Jana Krishnamurthi New Delhi, June 30 “Mr Krishnamurthi, who has served the party selflessly for the past 50 years should not be shunted out from the party in this manner,” a senior party functionary at BJP Headquarters told The Tribune when asked to comment on the issue. He felt that the Prime Minister and Home Minister L.K. Advani should have had a meeting with him and took him into confidence before deciding such an important issue. “Mr Krishnamurthi has such a long association with Mr Vajapyee and Mr Advani that he would have then and there agreed,” he said not willing to be quoted. Another senior leader of the party, who is known for his proximity with Mr Vajpayee, said “a mature party like the BJP should have handled the matter in a mature manner.” “You ask anyone in the party, from the grassroot level to the top, each one of them would vouch for Mr Krishnamurthi’s sincerity, honesty and integrity... A man of such a quality should have had an honourable exit from the Presidentship of the party,” he said on condition of anonymity. Pointing out that Mr Krishnamurthi always stayed away from manipulative politics, he said the outgoing President turned down the request of Sports Minister Uma Bharti for her inclusion in the Working Committee of the party even as she threatened not to campaign for the party during the Uttar Pradesh elections. Interestingly, one of the former BJP Presidents, who had
apparently tried to overshadow Mr Krishnamurthi during the recent Assembly elections by directly communicating with Mr Vajpayee and Mr Advani, was also full of praise for the outgoing chief. Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat is understood to be cut up over the manner in which the Jana Krishnamurthi issue was handled and had told the BJP leadership that “this smacks of Congress culture and not the BJP culture.” Mr Shekhawat, who is tipped to be the Vice-Presidential candidate of the NDA, met Mr Advani late last evening. |
Tehelka money came from abroad: ED
New Delhi, June 30 Submitting a 14-page fresh affidavit to the commission, probing alleged corruption in defence deals, the Enforcement Directorate gave a detailed account of findings during its investigations against Shanker Sharma, owner of First Global, who had purchased 10 per cent shares of Tehelka at a premium of Rs 3.5 crore. The ED claimed Sharma had secured a banking remittance of $ 1.25 lakh from Dubai and alleged that the same was transferred to its Indian-based firm and later used for acquiring 10 per cent shares in the Tehelka portal. The ED’s affidavit said, “Sharma acquired a company in Mauritius called Harrow Enterprise (incorporated) on (June 23, 1998), whose name was changed to First Global Mauritius on July, 1999.” The company, at the time of takeover, had a share capital of $ 2 comprising two shares of $ 1 each. However, at the end of the financial year on March 23, 2000, the company showed $ 11.89 lakh as operating profit. “Sharma was interrogated by the Enforcement Directorate and he did not give any particulars as to the transactions that gave rise to this huge income of $ 11.89 lakh” the affidavit said. The ED affidavit said in the course of interrogation of Ahmed Shamsuddin, who was arrested (now on bail) by the Mumbai police in connection with the Bharat Shah case, it was found that Dubai-based firm Jamila Traders, of which he was a partner, had transferred $ 1.25 lakh to First Global Mauritius. The ED alleged that Shamsuddin admitted that his firm had sent monies in the bank account of First Global Mauritius.

Better facilities for Geelani
in jail Ranchi, June 30 Top state officials visiting the jail for an on-the-spot inspection have instructed the Birsa Munda jail authorities to improve the overall conditions and arrangements of Mr Geelani. The jail authorities have also been asked to make separate arrangements for the preparation of food for the “VIP prisoner”. On June 21, Mr Geelani had threatened the jail authorities of self-immolation if the living conditions and facilities made available to him were not improved immediately. Since his lodging in the jail he had been demanding food of his choice and other facilities but the Jail Superintendent had refused them all owing to what was perceived as ambiguity over his status as a prisoner. |
