Master XI stun Namdhari Club

Ludhiana, June 29
Master XI survived some anxious moments before romping home victorious 1-0 against their formidable opponents Namdhari Club in the inaugural Alankar Tony Gold Cup Six-a-Side Hockey Tournament being organised by the Aryan Hockey Club, which began at the astroturf ground of Punjab Agricultural University here today.

Master Club's goalkeeper, Mandeep Singh, was at the centre stage as he thwarted many scoring chances.

He stood like a rock between the goal and Namdhari forward line who made repeated attacks but failed to pierce through. Their skipper, Harminderpal Singh, struck in the 13th minute of the second half to wrap up the issue 1-0.

Earlier, in the first match of the tournament, Sonu Ghuman Club played a goalless draw against Doraha Club. In another match, Guranam XI of Bhaini Sahib scored a hard-fought 2-1 win over B Baker XI.

B Baker XI shot into an early lead when Jasdev Singh found the target in the 9th minute to put his side ahead. Eight minutes later, Gurnam XI equalised through Hanspal and the match winner came off the stick of Sardar Singh with three minutes to go for the whistle.

The match between Punjab Police, Ludhiana, and Speed Fund Academy, Ludhiana, ended in a 1-1 draw. Harmeet Singh of the academy put his team ahead in the 11th minute. Ludhiana cops restored parity in the second half through Mandeep Gill.

In the sub-junior section, Gurmeet Singh scored a hat-trick as M.P.S. Grewal XI registered an easy 3-0 victory over Laddi Club. In the second match, Alankar Tony Club of Kube village drew 1-1 against Harpal Club of PAU Ludhiana. Alankar Tony Club went into the lead through Deepak. Sapan neutarlised the lead in the second half.

Earlier, Mr Devi Dyal, president, Punjab Rural Sports Promotion Council, inaugurated the tournament. Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, presided over the inaugural function. Three former olympians — Hardeep Singh Grewal, Ramandeep Singh, Didar Singh and national hockey coach, Baldev Singh — were also present on the occasion.

Summer camp concludes

Ludhiana, June 29
The third Annual Summer Vacation Sports Camp of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Ludhiana, concluded on Friday. More than 200 students took part in the camp, which was inaugurated on June 1 by Sister Sobel and Father Davis, principal and director, respectively, of the school.

Giving details of the camp, Mr Newton Manzoor, in charge sports activities, said the maximun participation was in cricket, as 80 students attended the camp. It may be mentioned here that the school cricket team performed exceedingly well by winning Parle G Inter-School Cricket Tournament organised by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association under the ageis of Punjab Cricket Association last year. They had also won Punjab School Zonal Cricket Championship for boys U-19 and U-14 while finished runners-up in U-16 years category.

Students also participated in other disciplines such as football (60), hockey (20), basketball (15) and skating (30). "The advantage of the camp was that the students, even during the vacation woke up early, chalkout time-table and came to the school to take part in the games”, Mr Newton said.

PBA selects cagers

The Punjab Basketball Association (PBA) conducted trials to select players (U-16) who would be given training for three weeks at Guru Nanak Stadium here. 

The selected boys are Yadwinder Singh of Amritsar, Jagdeep Singh of Ganganagar, Sukhdeep Singh of Ludhiana, Rajan Mehra of Ludhiana and Sweetpal Singh of Bathinda.

According to a press note issued by Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary, PBA, more players will be selected.
