Sarojini Hall warden awaits transfer orders
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 27
Dr Veena Sachdeva, warden of Sarojini Hall at Panjab University, awaits her new transfer orders by the university following her decision to vacate the earlier premises.

She quit the hostel following a student agitation complaining of her ‘high-handedness’ in hostel administration’.

A delegation of the Panjab University Teachers Association which included Prof P.K.Mittal, president, Prof P.P.Arya and Dr Keshav Malhotra met the Vice Chancellor to this regard. Dr Sachdeva in a letter to the Vice Chancellor has written that” in the interest of the university I would not like to go back to Sarojini hall”.

PUTA in a press note said “ a handful of residents of Sarojini Hall were misguided to agitate on non-issues with support from some outsiders who actually encamped on the premises of the hostel and used its facilities”.

“The most unfortunate aspect of such a happening is that it demoralises those teachers who do their duties earnestly and put in their best efforts to implement the rules in letter and spirit”, the release added.

Meanwhile, a three-member committee constituted by the Vice Chancellor to look into the issue has recommended that” considering the best efforts of the warden to improve the state of discipline in the hostel, it will be in fitness of the things for the university authorities to find ways to defuse the present situation amicably in the interest of the university and fairness to all concerned.”

The committee says “ in order to ensure that such incidents do not recur, the canteen and STD booths which are currently outside the hostel building should be shifted include and the guest room should be shifted outside.”

The committee has appreciated the sincere efforts put in by the warden to improve discipline and general administration of Sarojini Hall.

Stumping city with her ‘Jalwa’
Aditi Tandon
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 27
No matter how high the tide, this woman has always had the knack to ride it and ride it in style. Notwithstanding initial days of dejection in the film industry where she had headed with golden dreams in her eyes, Archana Puran Singh went on to make her presence felt. And since the day this Dehra Dun girl made a sensational debut in “Jalwa,” her charms have not failed her.

Her presence is still electrifying, her conduct perfect and her wits strong enough to take her straight to the heart of her audience. For Archana Puran Singh, life was meant to be like that. And why not? Had big roles not been destined for her, she would not have clinched the lead role in “Jalwa,” even while Dimple Kapadia had already signed the project.

Laughs the ever-glamorous Archana, who was in town today on an invitation from Spice Telecom “I believe in the ways of destiny. It was a screen test which got me the role in “Jalwa”. But I can never thank Dimple Kapadia enough for having walked out on the role. She had been finally signed but she withdrew because her dates were clashing. I have to still send her flowers for that favour.” And naturally because had it not been for this break of sorts in the film world, Archana would have taken much long to reach where she is today. Her world changed with films and she learnt to work on her strongest area — comedy.

“I have never planned the tone of the roles I portray. But somehow with all the appearances I made on the small screen as also on the big screen in films like “Raja Hindustani” and then “Kuch Kuch hota hai,” a certain element of humour became an inseparable part of my being. People began identifying me with my ability to make them laugh. Ever since, even if I have done a negative role it has had very distinct comic streaks.” Not that comedy comes as something superficial to Archana, who is now anchoring the premiere game show “Khelo Number Khelo” for Zee TV. She is happy in her mould as a comedian. “It is satisfying in the sense that it gives you a wider base. Although I have performed various characters I am the most comfortable doing films. Film acting entails no stress. On the other hand, compering and anchoring is the most satisfying, but the most demanding at the same time.”

As of now, Archana is working on a number of projects. Having directed “Jaane Bhi Do Paaro” (a soap for the small screen), Archana is now aiming higher. She will shortly direct a film, under the aegis of Subhash Ghai who is still searching for a suitable script. Archana will also anchor another show for Zee TV in August.
