Ludhiana, June 23
The final match in the VIth Chaman Lal Malhotra Cricket Cup Tournament for Boys (u-15) organised by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association here today at the Arya College for Boys ground between LDCA XI (A) and Sargodha National Public School proved to be a mismatch as the former romped home comfortably by eight wickets. Contrary to the expectations, Sargodha National Public School, who earlier in the league match, had given a tough fight to the LDCA XI before going down by one wicket on the last ball of the encounter were no match to their opponents today.
LDCA XI (A) captain Parveen Saroye won the toss and invited Sargodha lads to bat. The batsmen failed to cope up with the deadly bowling of Gaurav Dawar and Nakul who chipped in with two wickets apiece conceding 19 runs each. Their innings culminated at 106 runs with main contributions coming through Dushyant Kohli (22), Sushyant Kohli (13) and Kawaljeet (11).
Requiring 107 runs for victory, LDCA XI, after losing two wickets (Atul Kohli-17 and Gaurav Dawar -12) achieved the target (110 for 2) in 18.1 overs. Parveen Saroye (31 n.o.) played a captain’s knock and he was ably assisted by Mukul who remained unconquered on 29.
Mr B K Mehta, District and Sessions Judge, Amritsar, gave away prizes to the winners. The players of all the six participating teams — KVM Senior Secondary School, SAN Jain Senior Secondary School, Green Land Senior Secondary School, Sargodha National Senior School, LDCA XI (A) and LDCA XI (B) were given prizes by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association. Mr Chaman Lal Malhotra, former Ranji captain and chairman, Selection Committee, Punjab.
Dushyant Kohli of Sargodha National Public School, for his total 236 runs in the tournament, was adjudged the ‘best batsman’. LDCA XI’s skipper Parveen Saroye (227 runs and 10 victims) was declared the ‘best wicketkeeper-batsman’. Yogesh (14 for 138) of Sargodha National Public School and Gaurav Dawar (189 runs and 10 wickets) of LDCA XI were named ‘best bowler’ and ‘best allrounder’ respectively.
Six-a-side hockey:
Raj Kumar Prashar Club prevailed over Olympian Surjit Club, 2-1, to win the title in the Summer Season Six-a-side Hockey League Tournament organised by the Aryan Hockey Club at the Astroturf ground of the Punjab Agricultural University here on Sunday.Surjit club surged ahead in the seventh minute through a field goal by Lakhwinder Singh. Eight minutes later, Raj Kumar Prashar Club restored parity through Jaswant Singh.
The all important goal for Prashar Club came in the 63rd minute when Kuljeet Singh gave a parallel pass to captain Sukhwinder Singh who made no mistake and helped his team to win the trophy.
Jaswant Singh of Raj Kumar Prashar Club was declared ‘the player of the tournament’. Mandeep Singh and Varinder Pal Singh of the same club were named ‘the best goalkeeper’ and ‘man of the final match’, respectively. Pargat Singh of Parmjit Club was adjudged the ‘best scorer’.
Olympian Didar Singh of Haryana and national hockey coach Baldev Singh presented the trophy to the winners.
