Omar’s ‘coronation’ fails to enthuse migrants Jammu, June 23 Omar’s “coronation” does not excite the border migrants. “I am waiting for compensation for my six acres which the troops had occupied for laying mines,” said Rajbir Singh of Samba. He said, “We have become refugees and are banking on meagre relief and ration from the government which also is not available regularly.” Others said, “Whether Omar is NC chief or Farooq Abdullah, we may not be the beneficiaries.” Yet another group was a bit volatile while saying that it was intriguing that “our counterparts in Punjab and Rajasthan received compensation and all that we have got has been Rs 3.75 crore.” Since this amount was to be distributed among the farmers in Jammu and Kathua districts, “each family received a pittance.” “I am concerned about the survival of my family members and not about who is our Chief Minister or the Prime Minister,” said Ajay Singh who cannot afford to even get a hair cut. The Revenue authorities explained that the Government of India delayed reimbursement of compensation for the land occupied by the troops since January for laying mines because there was a big variation between the report submitted by the Army and state authorities. While the Army authorities had recommended Rs 15 crore as compensation money, the state government sought Rs 50 crore to Rs 60 crore. The state authorities had explained in their report that 70,000 acres of land in the Jammu sector had been occupied by the Army for defence purposes. But the Army authorities had stated that not more than 15,000 acres of land had been occupied. It was following the pressure mounted by the Union Minister for Food Processing, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, that the government distributed Rs 3.75 crore as first instalment. The state and Army authorities have been directed to carry out a joint survey and submit their report within three weeks. The migrants are depressed as this process may take another two to three months. “We have neither reaped the rabi crop nor harvested the kharif crop. Several of our brethren lost huge stocks of wheat when they were set ablaze in the explosion of mortar shells fired by Pakistani troops from across the Hiranagar sector,” the migrants said in chorus. These migrants no longer trust the Pakistani forces deployed across the border. They said, “As soon as we return, the Pakistani troops may resort to heavy firing and shelling.” Hence, they have been demanding allocation of alternative land where they could build small houses to be used during emergency situations. They have also demanded an increase in the quantum of ration and cash relief. |
