Soccer mania grips city
Arvind Katyal

Chandigarh, June 21
Soccer mania has finally gripped the city in this otherwise cricket-loving country. With today’s two quarter-final matches being over and with Brazil and Germany making into the last four, now the next nine days will be equally poised. The live telecast by Ten sports and deferred showing by Doordarshan has further added to the channel of 2002 FIFA World Cup.

City residents seemed to be taking soccer matches very seriously.

Dr Purshottam Rana, a former football coach of the National Sports Authority of India who is now settled at Chandigarh, said, “It is the media which has given the desired boost to the game”. Rana said according to him Brazil, Germany and South Korea had a better chance of occupying top three positions. He said Brazil was now having a world class player in Ronaldinho and he, in the company of Rivaldo, had the potential to defeat any team. He said Yokahama, the venue of the final, might become the lucky hunting ground for Brazil. He said Brazil had met England on three occasions in 1958, 1962 and 1970 and had won all these games.

Rakesh Bakshi, secretary of the Chandigarh Football Association, said, it was nice that majority of people were watching football matches with interest. He said the today’s quarter-final ties between Brazil and England and Germany and USA were of much interest to the fans. He said people even missed offices to watch the Brazil-England match live. He said it was lunch time for office-goers who cheered for every moment by watching the dying minutes of the match in various showrooms in Sector 17. When Brazil was declared the winner, most of the people were unanimous in their view that if a team like Brazil could bounce back after trailing 0-1, then they could do wonders.

Rubal Soni and Sidharth Soni, both brothers and aged 13 and 15 respectively, said they were glued to their television sets to specifically watch Ronaldinho in action. Rubal said though he played cricket and did cycling, but watching football live on TV was a great fun. He said the excitement increased when Ronaldinho equalised the game. Sidharth said, he was disappointed when Brazilian forward and favourite was sent off the ground for committing a foul.

Shefali, a Class XI student, said she was not much interested in sports but today when she watched the Brazil-England tie, she was quite impressed with the kind of fast-paced game that both teams played. Shefali said, she wished, to see Brazil and meet Germany in the final.

Mr Jagdish Chander, a retired professor, said, “The world cup soccer has generated a lot of enthusiasm even among the old persons this time”. He said even while strolling in the evening hours, politics was not the topic of discussion these days, football had eclipsed other topics. He said in his view Brazil was the most favourite.
