Summer cold cases on the rise
Chitleen K. Sethi
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 16
With weather gods playing moody, the number of people suffering from summer cold is on the rise. It is a typical English summer problem, but this year city residents are complaining of cold and cold-related symptoms which go on for days and end up in a chronic cough or a sensitive nose or sore throat.

Stating that summer cold can be both allergic or viral in nature, Dr J.S. Goraya of the Department of Paediatrics, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, points out that in such cases mainly symptomatic treatment is possible. ‘‘Viral cold is less common in summer, a number of people suffer from cold due to allergies in this season”, he says.

Dr Vivek Mohan, a city-based homoeopath, states once it is diagnosed whether the cold is viral or allergic, we focus on the predominant symptoms of the cold and that helps us to decide medicines for the patient. He also mentions that every individual reacts differently to similar problems. There may be some members in a family who will develop cold if there is a sharp change in temperature while others will not be affected. ‘‘We, after having treated the person for the symptoms, look into the cause of the person’s susceptibility to that problem and start treatment for that. In cases of viral infections, we try and work on the patient’s resistance and improve it,’’ he says.

Summer cold is generally due to allergy to Congress grass which starts growing with the first pre-monsoon showers and doctors feel that since this year rains have been erratic, allergy cases have started coming in a little early. People or children sensitive to Congress grass or wheat husk, pollen or even house dust are more susceptible to summer cold. Many people, especially children, get it because of excessive use of air-conditioners and sudden change of temperatures. Eating very cold stuff many also cause cold. Slight cough, running nose, watery eyes and fever are the main sympious of summer cold.

According to Dr Bhavneet, in charge of the PGI’s children emergency, such type of cold can also be a manifestation of other infections that have not been treated properly. However, there has not been any substantial increase in the number summer cold cases coming to the PGI,” she adds.

Sport is the lifeline of any development and we must ensure that it gets proper acceleration. These words came from Mr Hari Narain Singh, Town and Country Planning Minister, Himachal Pradesh. Mr Hari Narain hails from Nalagarh and was here in the DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, to inaugurate the All-India Under-17 Cricket Tournament being organised by the Sports Promoters Club.

He said Himachal Pradesh was surging ahead in the sports arena as the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, was taking interest in sports promotions. He cited the examples of construction of various stadia in Dharamsala, Una and getting clearance from the defence authorities for renovation of the world famous Anandale ground in Shimla. He said this ground could then be used for holding international cricket matches in times to come.
