Caste feud in men’s hostel on North Campus New Delhi June 14 The matter came to a head recently when Suresh Chander
Nagar, a Dalit resident of the hostel and the mess secretary, charged a fellow resident, Rakesh Singh
Dhanda, of making disparaging remarks against him in the dining hall on May 21. “Rakesh approached me aggressively and started to abuse me,” he alleged. Suresh is now on an indefinite hunger strike demanding the immediate removal of the hostel Provost Prof Abhai Kumar Maurya. He is also demanding the expulsion of Rakesh and a thorough and independent time-bound enquiry into the administration of the hostel. These charges are, however, vehemently denied by
Rakesh. “This complaint against me is vague, vexatious and actuated by malicious considerations. All the allegations of Nagar would fly in the face of a letter dated May 23 of Attar Singh, Mess bearer, informing the office that he had supplied the evening meals to Nagar on May 21 and 22 in his room,” Rakesh said. “As I was exposing the gross irregularities committed by Suresh in managing the affairs of the mess, therefore he has filed this complaint with malicious intentions”, he added. Suresh, who succeeded Rakesh as the mess secretary of the hostel in May, alleged that Rakesh had stockpiled the ration for May on the last day of April itself, thereby interfering in the functioning of the mess. Suresh has also charged the Provost, Prof
Maurya, of trying to “blackmail” and seeking to “bargain” with him. Prof
Maurya, on his part, has dismissed all allegations of caste and regional bias and held some “vested interests and political forces” responsible for vitiating the atmosphere in the hostel. “All the hostels are mostly dominated by students from one State which I don’t want to mention. And I have done my best to break their monopoly. That is precisely the reason why they are all ganging up against me and using SC/ST students as their weapon. And they can go to any extent to prove their dominance. But I would not let that happen’’, Prof. Maurya said. A probe committee has been constituted by the authorities to look into the matter. The committee, headed by Prof Anil Sadgopal, will inquire into the incidents leading to the allegations and counter-allegations and will also suggest appropriate measures to restore normalcy in the hostel. The committee will submit its report within a month. |

Development work in colonies around IAF base stops Faridabad, June 14 While the problem persists, there has been no satisfactory response from either the district administration or MCF officials for halting the work in several colonies in the area. A former senior Deputy Mayor and the corporator from the area, Mr Shiv Charan Lal Sharma, squarely blamed the MCF for the present crisis. While he and his wife representing Wards 5 and 6, respectively, had been suspended on `bogus’ grounds, he said the decision to stop development works within 900 metres of the Air Force Depot base was illegal and unjustified. Although the area had been videographed and visited by the Air Force officials several times, he said these colonies had been very old. Some of these, including Dabua, Nangla, Saran Road, parts of Jawahar Colony, and Nangla Extension, had come into existence way back in 1974-75 and the then municipal authorities had even regularised them. He said halting the development works in these colonies, the residents of which had been paying all taxes and development charges to the MCF, was illegal and shocking. He claimed that the Deputy Commissioner had already announced that no demolition could be carried out within 900 metres of the Air Force base. These areas had thousands of pucca houses and some of them had been older than the station itself, he said. The Air Force authorities had videographed the area of 100 metres radius around the base and it was stated a few months ago that no further construction would be allowed within this area. But, according to Mr Sharma, the MCF had stopped all the development works for past over couple of months and the residents had become victims of the discriminatory and biased attitude of the corporation. He suspected that the vested interests, who had got him and his wife framed in a false case, could be behind this MCF step to harass and victimise him and the people represented by him. He has appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to intervene in the matter and resume the development works in the area. |
