GMCH records Chandigarh, June 13 Sources told that the sleuths carried out their investigations for about two hours. According to sources CBI personnel also inspected documents pertaining to various purchases done by the engineering department of the GMCH. |
YPS cricketer returns from UK with laurels Chandigarh, June 13 Sunny who took to cricket about five years back, said: “It was his parents and the school Principal, Mr H.S. Dhillon, who all these years encouraged him a lot to do well in cricket as well as in his studies”. He took cricket coaching from a SAI coach, Sukhwinder Singh Bawa, at the DAV Senior Secondary School coaching centre in Sector 8 and said he always made it a point to train hard for excelling in his batting and that too an opening batsman. On his recent tour to the UK, Sunny said he played for Bloxwich Cricket Club, which was founded in 1848. The club runs three Saturday teams competing in the Staffordshire Clubs Cricket Championship, two Sunday teams competing in the V Sports Sunday Cricket League and three junior teams playing in the West Midlands Youth Cricket League. He represented the club in league and friendly fixtures during April and May and at first and second team levels. Sunny, a right-handed batsman, had scored unbeaten 64 runs against Wombourne Cricket Club, while another fine unbeaten 52 runs against Pelsall Club. Sunny said his top order batting also earned him first team league place, opening the batting. He got commendation certificate from Mr Paul Bailey, secretary, Bloxwich Club, where he was described as a batsman with considerable talent, possessing an array of attacking shots as well as defensive ones. Bailey said in both off and off the field, his attitude had been excellent and further described him as a worthy player. Even in the appreciation certificate given by the Principal of YPS School, Sunny was praised for his all-round ability to perform well in sports and studies. It may be recalled that Sunny also played cricket at district level for Ropar in under-19 and under-16 section. He played against Hoshiarpur, Nangal, Kapurthala and Chandigarh. Sunny also captained the YPS School team in their match against Doon School, Dehradun, Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, Pine Grove School, Solan, and Punjab Public School, Nabha. Sunny also played for the ICSE Schools’ Cricket Meet and was given school colour in cricket and certificate in excellence in cricket. His mother, Gick Grewal, a renowned artiste, is as a source of inspiration for him. He said she always advised him to give equal importance to sports along with studies as the former help in building confidence, concentration and patience in life. Sunny now plans to play in inter -college and inter-varsity meets and also the inter-district tournaments to hone his skills in cricket. |
Taskeen enters final Chandigarh, June 13 However, in the boys’ section in both under-14 and under-16 sections, it will be an all Chandigarh affair in finals slated for tomorrow. While in under-14 section, Gursher Harika to cross swords with Vijayant Malik and in under-16, Jitin Bishnoi to vie with Sanam K Singh in the final. Coaches’ training The first phase of coaches’ training organised by the Punjab Sports Department concluded at NIS, Patiala, on Thursday. Briefing newspersons, Mr Kartar Singh, Director, Sports, said more than 100 coaches of their department attended the programme. Mr M.S. Malik, Director-General, Haryana Police, and president, Wrestling Federation of India, addressed the gathering. Coaches attended the training in badminton, gymnastics, tennis, table tennis, basketball, cycling, judo, swimming and weightlifting. Mr K.S. Kang, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Patiala, and president, Punjab Archery Association, was the chief guest on the concluding day. |
Taxi stand operators
served notice Chandigarh, June 13 The decision to call taxi operators was taken today after the committee under the chairmanship of Mr Chhabra visited around 20 authorised and unauthorised taxi stands at various places. The committee found two stands with kundi connections in Mani Majra and Sector 43. The committee visited taxi stands at High Court, MLA Hostel, Sectors 7, 8, 26, Mani Majra, 49, 43, 35, 22 and 17. The committee chairman indicated that the representation of the taxi stand operators could only be considered if they first cleared their dues as per a formula to be worked out through negotiations. He said the operators had offered Rs 2,000 per month parking fee for a plot above 2,000 sq mt and Rs 1,500 for smaller plots, which could not be acceptable for recovery. The corporation had slapped Rs 7,500 and Rs 5,000 per month parking fee in a decision in January, 2000, which was never paid by the operators. The operators had approached the High Court where their application was rejected. |
