Residents and traders of Trivedi Camp near Mubarikpur village observed a complete bandh today to protest against the alleged detention of eight senior Akali activists. Protesters also raised anti-government and anti-police slogans at a rally in the market of Trivedi Camp, about 3 km from here.

Four injured in accidents
Panchkula, June 11
Four persons were injured in two separate accidents in the district in the past 24 hours.
According to a press note issued by the police, a car (HR-03C-9037) driven by Balkishan hit Mr Ashwani Kumar, a resident of Khataula village, and two others, while they were waiting for a bus at the Sector 6/7 dividing road on Sunday.

2 killed in accident
Lalru, June 11
Two persons died and 12 others sustained serious injuries when a truck and a Himachal Roadways Transport bus collided on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway near Lalru here late last night. The police said bus (HP-14-5308) was on its way from Hardwar to Shimla when it collided with a truck (HR-45-4770) headed towards Ambala at about 10.30 pm in Dapper village.

Murder accused arrested
Chandigarh, June 11
Balwinder Singh Brar, who allegedly shot a property dealer, Baljinder Singh, in Sector 21 in July 1998, was arrested by the police from Faridkot today. He was later remanded in police custody by a local court.

Plea to quash Punjab circular

In a petition filed before the High Court, an organisation of advocates — Lawyers’ Initiative — today sought directions for quashing of a circular issued by the state of Punjab two years ago “completely nullifying the functions of the vigilance department” and disabling it from “checking corruption against public servants”.

Tantrik’s bail plea dismissed
Chandigarh, June 11
The bail plea moved by a tantrik, Rameshwar, who was arrested by the UT police in a case of cheating, was today dismissed by a local court. The counsel to the accused pleaded before the magistrate that the applicant, Rameshwar, was implicated in the case.
